Simply eat....

..less than usual on two days a week.

That is the principle behind the Fast Diet also known as the 5:2 diet which two of my friends have recommended. I think I will give it a try.

For 30 days.

I will read the book this week-end and start on Monday. That will give me time to shop.

What approach will you take? Will you repeat something that has worked for you in the past? Or try something different? Or also try the Fast Diet? Maybe your health/wellbeing-related goal  won't be losing weight - having more energy, keeping weight on....you might spend some time over the weekend deciding on a realistic target for yourself and getting ready to start on Monday?

One of the things the authors Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer say  is 'once you make a public commitment you are much more likely to stick with it.'

So join us in the comments - together we can do it! Your comments so far have been so energising! Yay!

NB The Weebly format does not always let you  post a reply to a comment immediately below the comment - so if it gets a bit muddly just post your comment anyway! We are all smart people. We will work it out. The important thing is that we talk to one another, don't you think?

My method is also based on fasting, but a bit each day. I have muesli for breakfast, the main meal at lunch, a cereal bar or similar about 5.00 p.m. and then nothing except water for the rest of the day. Combined with all the exercise I get it works well, but only if I stick to it.. No sneaky glasses of evening wine. I shall start again on Monday :)

I do a slight variation of this - eat between 10am and 6 pm. For me, it translates into 2 meals and a snack. This is when I am actually hungry and it does seem to be working for me.

Partial fasting is a very effective way to lose weight - I am only going to have to do it two days a week - I admire your and Jessica's commitment to doing it daily Katherine. Keep us informed!

I have to think a bit more about my - realistic- target as all those enthousiastic comments made me want to really join in. I think it will have to do with attention for my muscles as the phrase 'skinny bat wings' really struck a chord and made me smile.

That's why, rather than going back to yesterday, I post a question for Madeleine here now. I very much liked what you told us about practicing gentle yoga. Did you have help with that (DVD, internet) and if so could you share that here? I practice ChiNengQiGong which is a great help for my sense of balance and energy but it has no effect on my muscles. And to be realistic: I cannot manage 40 minutes, does a shorter period work too?

I can't manage 40 minutes yet either Cath, but maybe we can work up to it? :-) I'd be really interested in any links to some gentle yoga practice too and I'll see what I can find this weekend...

I love knowing what works for other people - the whole point of sharing is that it might work for others too. Thanks Lotta.

You can't go wrong with gentle yoga - look forward to some links from those who are finding it beneficial. Cheers Cath!

Oh, this is a great idea, and I would love to join, as my doctor specifically ordered me to get some muscle... I have the habit of doing a little bit of yoga at home (you tube videos), but I don´t stick to it and do it only for short periods, so the results are mainly on the head and not on the body... But I will be on vacation this month and realistically couldn't pull it out this month. I'll be sheering you from the outside for now, and will start in September.

Meant to reply yesterday! Am definately going for it with you all. The 5:2 diet is a good way of doing it. I try to limit my treats to the weekend aswell, although we have French friends arriving on Wednesday until next Monday, so I will give myself more leeway for the first week!(does that sound like excuses already...?) You don't sound like you are making excuses - you sound like someone who has a life! :-)
I wonder if your French friends know Mireille of French Women Don't Get Fat? They may have some good tips!

I do love the sense of community on your blog Freda. I'm feeling so motivated now, especially having read Madeleine's comment this morning (thank you so much Madeleine - have replied on previous post) - it suddenly all feels possible. Glad you're feeling energised about it too Freda, and I think the public commitment thing is definitely true! Now for some research into yoga videos...

Oh I love that too! To paraphrase Obama from a recent speech 'You pick me up.' Thank you all so much. I really feel sure I can do this now.

The replies to comments are really really mixed up - sorry - don't understand how that happened........

Read all your comments about the 5:2 diet with interest. I think it has potential and have had a try at it in the past. One of the things I found of most use was not to start eating in the morning until you are actually hungry. As I am someone who can happily go til 10.30 am before considering breakfast, this really works for me. And it also means two meals a day instead of three.
I also find staying off the carbs and increasing the amount of protein in all meals helps stave off fits of the munchies!
My greatest problem is getting motivating myself to get moving. The friends I used to go walking with have been away a lot this year (as have I) and our regular Monday walks have now disappeared. Not keen on walking on my own. Any thoughts?

Now that is useful - that waiting till you are hungry in the morning. I could happilly wait until 11 for breakfast so will try this on Monday. Protein with every meal has been a habit for many years - as much to do with keeping my mood up as with feeling full. As for the walking..hmm. Treadmill? (definately not for me though.)
