Simply Eat....without getting fat..

If you are reading this in UK you may have seen the programme called The Men Who Made Us Fat (it's on iplayer until 5th July and is episode one of a series of three programmes on Thursday evenings on BBC2).

Jacques Peretti makes a very good case for the theory that people are not lazy and greedy but addicted to high fructose corn syrup in our foods - almost all our foods: meat, bread, savoury snacks, soft drinks and most processed foods and ready meals, many 'health' foods. Fructose, lactose, maltose, dextrose, glucose, almost anything on the label ending on 'ose' is a sugar. Fructose has been found to interfere with the hormone leptin which controls appetite....!

The evidence against added sugars is mounting and the food industry are beginnning to sound defensive, like the tobacco industry when they were under pressure to come clean about the dangers of tobacco - cigarettes were 'good for you' not so very long ago!

Sugar has always been a bit of a problem for me - bursts of energy then overcome by tiredness, mood highs and lows..

Today I give up sugar.

(Did I really just say that? Now I'll have to stick to it..)

I totally agree with you about the sugar 'thing' and watched the programme with interest and, at times, shock and anger by turn. I find giving up sugar to be quite difficult and have had 2 quite long runs of being sugar free over recent years. I definitely feel many benefits, including being more happy in myself though both times found that it took me 3 weeks to get my brain and tastebuds to adapt to the sugar free way. I shall join you in your quest starting from now with mint tea and NO cake for supper!! xxx

Hi Jill. I too felt angry at the way we are being manipulated and the adulteration of our food.

I had one small cake which a friend brought when she came for coffee - it seemed rude not to! Otherwise I''m not finding it difficult this time. Stick with it - the benefits are worth it (including losing a few unwanted pounds in weight and saving a few in cash!)

Day 1 successfully completed - including gently refusing 2 offers of free home made cake in our fabulous Liz Earle store in Leeds city centre this afternoon!!

I can recommend Xylitol, which is a natural sugar alternative which is actually GOOD for the teeth, liver and many other internal organs. Tastes good too and does actually make a very nice scone... a cake that is good for you, oh joy!!
