Simply Grow..and the new greenhouse....

When do you use the garden most is my second question (see post here). Oops! First question tomorrow..

One of the advantages of a greenhouse is that you can garden comfortably even when the weather is bad.. I bought the new one from www.greenhousepeople.co.uk . They have fantastic half price bargains in January though you don't need to take delivery until spring which suited me perfectly. This one has square section corners, toughened glass, and a 'bar capping' system for fixing the glass which makes the whole structure stronger. (There are some with names like Hercules and Rhino which are stronger still.)

I use the garden at all times of day, but not much in the evenings as the midgies can be a pest then especially if the weather is damp. I miss that. In Oxfordshire and Yorkshire we would often garden till it got dark. And the scents tend to be stronger in the evenings. However the midgies don't like the sun, and I do so I have become a fair-weather gardener!

First seeds sown today.

The midges are going to get a fright this year. In Australia I discovered fly nets which are worn over your hat like a veil. I brought two back. It remains to be seen whether the midges are small enough to fit through but it certainly kept the flies off. It'll probably give the neighbours more of a fright come to think of it..

I didn't know you got them! Pesky things. We also invested in a Midge Eater and year on year I think they have got fewer (territorial apparently!) I like Alfresco insect repellent - it's really pleasant to use with no parabens etc but different things work for different people as you will know...Good luck for this season Jessica!

You've got the most important thing in the greenhouse already Freda - a chair! A good place for a tea break this time of year, especially with the satisfaction of seeds sown and new life appearing around you... Looks great!

Yes! The new life appearing from seeds like dust never fails to thrill. (Chrysanthemum spectabile Cecilia a special thrill.)

Your new greenhouse looks wonderful. We can have problems with ours when we have high winds. I will have to remember your recommendation. I have been holding off planting seeds I really must get on with it now spring has arrived! Sarah x

Spring has arrived with blustery winds, sleet and glimmers of sunshine - but it has arrived!

I am so envious - seeing yours even empty I am now pining for my old greenhouse. I think I would need the Rhino version to be sure it would not blown down again!

Wonderful greenhouse. But I get the aversion to midges. Evenings are tough for bugs. Some decades ago, I lived in Minnesota (aka Land of 10,000 Lakes). Everyone loved spending time at a lakeside cabin in the summer, but around sunset the most pervasive noise heard around any lake was the sound of people running into their cabins and screen doors slapping shut. MN should also be known as the land of 1 trillion mosquitoes.
