Simply Grow..asking the right questions....

If you have a garden, and if you are planning or redesigning one, I thought I would share some of the questions I ask clients before I begin work...

Question one -  What would you like to use the garden for?

To sit in, look at, hide in, grow your own food, let the children run free, grow flowers to pick for the house, add to the value of the property, attract wildlife, eat and drink in, sunbathe nude.........  Make your list as long as you like.

Then prioritise, as it's probable that not all your dreams will be fulfilled in one garden!

To work in, to enjoy the process of gardening itself. And a place to indulge in my obsession with plants!

The back garden should be a retreat, a place to enjoy a meal with friends, read the sunday papers, listen to the birds..enjoy puttering but not too much work! Flowers for cutting ....quiet, private, slightly wild and unruly, include a water element, (pond, birdbath or fountain), and a brick pathway of some kind....preferably with some moss beginning to grow in it...is that asking too much??

Definitely not too much - sounds very do-able. Are you already part way there?

My priorities for my small 'garden in the air' are: to be in close contact with a piece of nature, to be able to tend to it's needs, to nourish my eyes and soul, to have meals there whenever possible.

I can see how important this question is: I never before gave voice to the first two priorities.

It is a useful way to look at it I find.. Sounds magical Cath.

A private but spacious sanctuary between me and the outside world. Colourful, beautiful, natural, with flowers for cutting, fruit and veg for eating, and enough wildness to be magical, but manageable.
Oh, and a proper wooden swing just for fun! Would it be pushing it to have a hideaway art studio too?! Thank you Freda, you've made me think...

What a very clear vision and from what I've seen you have some of that magic already.

I think Jessica covered it for me too although I do also love bring in flowers to display in the house and give to friends. We also wouldn't be without home grown fruit and vegetables. Sarah x
