..to avoid the snow! We must have been in one of the very few places in UK not to have snowstorms (my village was cut off while I was away). Ardfern was bitterly cold but dry and bright with barely a flurry of the white stuff, and we had a most relaxing time.

We were five (three good cooks - I am so lucky with my friends!). A walk around the frozen ponds in Arduaine Gardens looking at the strange hieroglyphs on the frosted paths, books, films, food and wine and lots of laughter. We watched in amazement the rest of the country on the nightly news and shared pictures and news from our stranded friends and families.

The roads had re-opened when it was time to come home.

This seemed to be the only hazard (and we didn't see it).

Safe, yes but warm, no (normally mild West Wales). We were lucky in that we had plenty of food and didn't have to step outside the door apart from to feed the birds, but I have been cold for days. We have a north-facing house with large windows, a design that means we can't get at the roof to insulate to modern standards, and an old boiler - which woks well but is too small for the size of the house. It's not a problem apart from the when it's -5 degrees! We've not had conditions like this here for about 5 years, though, and it's warming up nicely now. I expect my bones will recover soon!

It is so extreme. Our holiday cottage was blissfully warm thank goodness. I hope you have thawed out by now Linda!

Your little sojourn in Ardfern sounds like bliss! I don't believe I have every been there. On the map, it looks like a fairly long and winding road to get there from where you are. We have had some pretty cold days here in the Paris area, with a bit of snowfall overnight on Wednesday. It has all melted now and the temperature is going up, joined by the rain.

We were so very lucky! I have seen the skating on the canals in the Netherlands on the news. I hope you are staying warm and well Cath.

That sounds lovely Freda. The snow has all gone here now and we're back, as ever, to rain. But gosh, it has been cold. I think the last time snow lay on the ground here was about six years ago, it was so strange to see it. Ready for Spring now. And the ground to dry out again!

The snow is still lying here but temperatures above freezing now - I usually have seeds started by now but not this year...

Sound like you had a lovely time away, Freda. Good job jinking the snow. We had snow, ice, closed roads, no electricity (=no heat, no hot water, no cooker), but we are safe and well, thank you for asking.

I'm afraid we didn't managed as gracefully as Lotta. Bread and salad for dinner, candle lights, all the blankets in the house and early bedtime, (quite hygge now that I write it! Did not feel like that at the time though) and I left my son at my parent's house, which wasn't affected as ours. All is back to normal now and at least for now, the experience of switching a light is a very mindful one.

I obviously need new friends... none of them are good cooks!! It sounds like a blissful few days Freda, and excellent timing! I'm just trying to work out a little story from those hieroglyphs...
Have been snowed in here, but all is well and snow melting now...
