The House Was Far Out At Sea All Night

Two new small (A5) watercolour paintings ready to go to an exhibition which opens at the end of the month at Roger Billcilffe Gallery in Glasgow.

The title of the second is from a line in the poem Wind by Ted Hughes.

I am lowering my prices this year - sales have slowed down in most of the art market (I'm not buying either!) and I want to keep my paintings affordable for more people. These are £155 unframed. (Similar work in previous years was £185).

What do you think about the prices of original art?

Are they too high?

Your work is extremely lovely but I do agree that it is so difficult to price original art.
I have a son who is a printmaker - he charges £35 for his linocuts which seems quite cheap when I see how many hours he has to spend cutting each layer of colour, sometimes four or five, and then the corresponding time taken printing them and drying in between. For some reason, apart from the skills involved, buyers do not take into account the amount of time taken, and the cost of materials etc.

£35 is a very modest price for there is also framing, carriage, insurance, gallery commision and more - you have to love it!
(could you send me your website address Rosemary? For some reason I can't click back...)

Your new watercolour paintings are so lovely and feel very wintery. I like the titles and the distant boats. It's quite a few years since we have bought any original art, many of our pictures we bought when we were first married and are among our treasured possessions, If the price was divided by the number of years of pleasure gained it seems a reasonable price to pay. One of the lovely thing about selling paintings is knowing that people will treasure them. I'm glad you have had so much pleasure from yours Sarah.

hi freda...ooooh! i love them!! and thanks for the intro to ted hughes' poem which inspired them.....i am not sure what size A5 would be....or what exactly the exchange rate would be for us dollars...currently a student of mine has several originals for sale for $400 US. i think they are worth it!...your seems to be priced right to me...warm smiles....julia

Thank you Julia! A5 is approx 8 x 7 ins, or 210 x 148 cms - I should have put this and £155 translates to 248 US dollars. Fortunately for me enough people seem to think my prices are worth it, but in the current financial climate I'm rethinking ...It's always difficult!

Lovely work, Freda and priced right for sales, I'd say. Everyone likes a bargain and these are certainly not over priced, even before reductions.
Good luck at Billcliffes.
