Simply..a cutting patch....

Above all I wanted a cutting patch. I was totally seduced by Sarah Raven's lovely book.

Picture

We removed the conifers which blocked the view, the slabs, a wreck of a shed and other junk, planted hedge to fill the large gaps and give us privacy from the houses on either side, mowed the rough grass, put up a shed and woodstore and a 6X8 greenhouse and started a cutting patch growing everything from seed...

Have you ever started a garden from scratch?

Can I ask if anyone has found the layout of the blog page changed and the size of the font reduced? Oddly it appears misaligned on my laptop but not on my tablet or phone, or when I am in 'edit' on the laptop. Weird, and annoying!

Yes it too was seduced by Sarah Raven. Although in my case it was by her seed catalogue. I embarked this year on a cutting garden using one of her planting plan selections. Confusingly it came with two plans, one for half hardy annuals and the other for hardy annuals although I thought I was buying enough for just one plot. They acknowledged that this had been unclear. I have too many seedlings now and without a greenhouse, maintaining the right levels of heat, light and humidity has been difficult. I had a brief discussion about this with Jinny Blom who says she has a friend to do her propagating for her as she doesn’t have the temperament for raising seeds. She recommended a book called The Flower Garden by Clare Foster on her Instagram account.

You get so many seedlings from even half a packet! There is always a point when I can hardly fit myself into the greenhouse to water them! Do you have anyone who would share the looking after for some of the plants? I do love it though...I used to sell the extra plants which was fun too. Good luck - I look forward to some photgraphs on your blog Lucille.

Yes, we started a garden from scratch 40 years ago...typical heap of dry dust full of half bricks & general builders' rubble. What I am most proud of is the vast wisteria which is in flower now and clothing two long chains and a pergola. Also the lovely Bramley apple which was pruned by an excellent lady gardener to a pleasing symmetry and which has moss on the trunk in true venerable apple tree style. Also love the red maple which is about 8' tall now. The rest of the garden isn't very special, but those things are.

Took a tip from you and listened to Private Passions again today. Jim and I always had that on during Sunday lunch.

This is the longest I have ever been in one house (19 years). You must know every inch of your garden Rosemary and your special things sound really lovely. I missed Private Passions today - IPlayer is so useful.

I do think the layout has changed as your writing (and the comments) come now in very long lines, rather than divided in short sentences (which I prefer by the way).

Experimenting with wild flowers on the balcony this year...

I am struggling to fix this Cath.
Wild flowers will be lovely on your balcony.

You layout is the same as always on my tablet, freda...have not checked on PC...we’ve started several garden patches from scratch, but have never been in one spot more than 15 years ...our garden at home is currently a shade garden due to our not being there very much! But i do love the peonies and siberian irises for cutting for sure...what you have created with your patch of ground is not only stunning but must be so satisfying, freda...it’s something to really be proud of..

Difficult to garden when you are away a lot Julia. But easy to care for things like iris and peony which flower before you go away is a great way to go about it. Looking back as I am now I do feel quite proud of the garden...
