Simply..a dish of water....

I watched a robin take a long bath in this shallow dish of water this morning. As well as bathing in it, birds drink from it, the swallows need it to make mud for their nests, it brings the sky down into the garden and reflects things in it. You can also tell at a glance if it's raining. It's an important addition to any garden however small. (I am scarifying the grass - it always looks worse before it looks better!)

When I am trying to make a decision I still find What would be simplest? my favourite helpful question but here is a good one from Gretchen Rubin -

What is the value of what I'm going to get if I...........?

That's a wonderfully helpful question and one which I shall adopt.
At present we are going through our home removing lots of inherited stuff that have sentimental value but which I feel are preventing us from moving forward with our lives.
They also take a lot of time up looking after them or making me feel guilty that I’m not looking after them properly!
I love the idea of your water dish bringing the sky down into the garden. We certainly use ours to check whether it's raining and laugh at the birds' antics in it.

Oh what a big task! A tip I read about was to take photographs of things - they take up no room. And maybe the question could be useful in this context too. A bird bath is such a simple source of pleasure isn't it,

We have two bird baths. One is a standard, with quite a shallow bowl and dries out easily. The other is deeper, a quite attractive, round, old feeder in cast iron, from an antiques fair. We've put a variety of pebbles inside so that smaller birds can stand on the stones in the water at a depth to suit them. All visiting birds love it - as do local cats who know that there is always water in our garden!

I hope none of the cats are 'birders'....

The neighbouring cats here choose a murky little puddle of rainwater in a dent in my old metal dustbin lid rather than their water bowls or the brook!

My question is 'which task or action would most alleviate my greatest current concern and make me feel most at peace, right now?'
I realise that this might sound negative, but sometimes I fret about inconsequential as well as significant things.
Another is 'which action that I can do today, would best move my dreams and aspirations forwards?'

That word 'action' is key here isn't it! Great questions.

Thank you for your questions, Freda. I've put them up on my wall.

Thanks Susan(Dorset). Those are really helpful questions too. I shall add them to the top of my sorting and clearing list !

Oh, I'm glad, Sue. Wishing you well, with letting go of the things no longer needed.

PS Thank you for the garden dish idea.
Needing some water in the garden, I'd been contemplating digging a huge hole in my lawn, to put a feeding trough into.
Your idea seems more manageable.

No electricity, no pumps, no plastic, no digging - just beautiful simplicity and there are some lovely ceramic dishes to be found!

My eyes/brain are so confused by the first photo! Is the dish upside down, or empty, or is it a trick reflection in water that makes the middle part look convex rather than concave? But aside from that, lovely! I'm fortunate to have the brook and enjoy watching the birds bathing in the shallows at the edge, so I hadn't thought to add any other water to the garden, but I would quite like to encourage more frogs...

What I can't get is why it looks oval when it is perfectly round and I photgraphed it from directly above (it is right way up and full to the brim). How lovely to have a brook Lotta.
