Simply..a lazy Sunday....

What else to do on a wet and sindy Sunday in August, but bake a few cakes and listen to some music.. Today's edition of Private Passions was particularly good.

I did have about 15 minutes of sunshine one day last week, but the real bright spot was the great news from MaryB and her obvious delight at getting home from hospital (see comments on last post).

(I, too, enjoyed Private Passions, and also like This Cultural Life and Music Matters - all on BBC Radio3 for those abroad)

Those berries are so beautiful - you're a bit ahead of us down South, for Autumnal changes. (But, made blackberry & apple jam yesterday)

I am wondering where the icing is. I am an icing girl. And Susan, Blackberry and Apple Jam sounds delicious! Hmmm, maybe that would be good on those cakes!

It is, Mary R.
I'm trying an old Central European recipe, where you just cover the fruit with half the weight of sugar (no water added!), rest for 3 hours then warm: do twice. Then rest for 5-10 hours and boil 15 mins: do this 4 times.
It makes a concentrated very fruity preserve, and in fact takes up less time ( can be fitted in around other tasks) than the English recipe of adding water and much more sugar, and watching over one long boil for fear of it catching.

That sounds luscious, Susan. Do keep it in the refrigerator when resting or on the stovetop?

Hi Mary R.
I rested it with lid-on, on a wooden breadboard. And, I warmed/boiled it, uncovered.
I'm going to try it with other fruits. Hope you will too, then we'll be boiling up, in tandem!

Susan, when you say 'half the weight of sugar' is that half the weight of the fruit or half the weight of sugar you would normally use. Thanks. going to give it a try.
