Although I trained in Printed Textiles at Glasgow School of Art, in my home I like plain and simple, and pattern only on things which are brought out occasionally..and usually one at a time. William Morris, Arts and Crafts, the Bloomsbury set and Liberty? I love to visit these kinds of interiors but would not want to live in them. (Too much visual stimulus! I would find it exhausting.)
..now and then.

agree that too much pattern can be visual overload, but 1 or 2 pieces? much easier to deal with. if that pansy pitcher ever goes missing...cross my heart...it wasn't me. (but maybe it was...love it!)

An impulse buy at a fair in York many years ago Cathy. Although I use all the other jugs for flowers I never put flowers in this one.

I agree with you about too much stimulus, Freda. Multiple patterns and colors can work in large spaces... but in small homes, there are just too many different energies bouncing off the walls...i am doing your “year to clear” process and finding that another big layer of stuff is flying out the door! Oh, so liberating...and now that i look at it...a lot of it is patterned! I wonder if part of it is how over-stimulated we are in general by our world, and our devices?

I do think you have hit the nail on the head Julia - the more turmoil there is outside in the world the simpler I want the inside of my home to be.. Glad you are liking A Year To Clear - do you have anything left?

Freda, there is always more to give away. i am finding the konmarie method a very spiritual practice in letting go. am also finding so much happiness in just giving things away.

I feel like that, not about colour, but about space. Each object, group of objects or picture has to have its own space, I can't stand not having somewhere to rest my eyes. My idea of hell is a heavily beamed room where the eye cannot find any clear space. It actually makes me feel ill.

My landscape design professor in Sweden said of a tree 'Honour it with its own space' . I think that can equally apply to iobjects in our homes.

That is just my problem (if indeed it is a problem) - I trained in fashion and textiles but have the same need for quiet visuals around me yet I love pattern. I just thought I had some kind of split personality.

I wanted to do Fine Art but didn't have the confidence when I was 20 but luckily the head of Printed Textiles was also a fine artist himself. It was many years before I began painting full time but no regrets! (I like your iris watercolour Viv.)

Plain and simple is what I like most too. I do choose and bring out objects with pattern, colours according to the seasons. Often two of a kind close together as I rather like the repetition of sameness. Somehow I find repetition more quiet than an object on its own.

The little one? That was a gift from my daughter. I may try two of a kind...

True for me too ! While I admire some decorative style I have to live in Scandinavian minimalism to feel comfortable . When my Mum died ,many years ago now , I was so relieved to find that I had not inherited her frilly, flowery, china !! We live in a large house so I dont think it has to do with small scale living.

I passed on family tea sets to my sister and the next generation But the plate with the little roses was my Gran's and the richly coloured patterned on was my Mum's. I love to use them occasionally but like you love Scandinavian minimalism best.
