I'm referring to Amazon pricing.

I thought I'd buy a copy of Altars by Denise Linn (thank you Gail) and found one Used Good for the princely sum of £0.09p plus postage. I could have paid £233.09 for a Used Good copy, or a New copy was available for only £396.19!

No-one has yet been able to explain this to me.....

I found something similar a few years ago where a particular third party seller had several books with ridiculous prices. We wondered about money laundering ??!!

A friend who sells books on Amazon says there are several reasons for this. Sometimes it is just a typo, but because as a seller you can opt to have your prices rise/fall a certain percentage in line with other people's, when one goes ridiculously high then many others do too. Sometimes it happens because there is a peak in traffic - lots of people looking at something and so the price automatically rises if there are not many copies available, or falls if there are lots to get rid of. And sometimes it is just someone trying it on and hoping if the book they are selling has rarity value someone somewhere will want it enough to pay £396.19!! He also suspects money laundering...

My father would had suggested that the higher the price, the less the person actually wants to part with the item.

I did that once with a glass bowl I'd made and didn't really want to sell... I put a ridiculously high price on it... and someone bought it!!!
