Simply..a sparkly skirt....

I could not resist this. People have an occasion coming up and go shopping for something to wear. I bought this on impulse and now must find or create an occasion...

I wore it to the preview of the latest exhibition, though I thought I might feel overdressed (more on that later). I also wore a coat I have had for seven years or so and have worn once!

It felt such fun after what seems like weeks in waterproofs and gardening clothes that I have decided to wear out all my 'good' clothes!

On an entirely less trivial note my daughters and some of Barry's swimming friends are swimming A Mile For Barry (in a quarry, in the sea, and in Dunoon swimming pool!) in September to raise funds for Ardgowan Hospice where my husband was wonderfully well cared for before he died of cancer last year. I know we all have our charities we like to support, but should you feel moved to give a small donation to help others be equally well looked after, I have added the giving page details below. We would be most grateful.

I think you may be about to touch on a vexed question - that of saving clothes for 'best' and the reality that, the moment never comes so I wear the same old clothes day in, day out. I am always uncomfortable if I think I'm going to be over dressed and so my bar is set very low!
It reminds me of the days when a house had a whole room set aside for best occasions, often the front parlour, and remained a chilly no-go area for most of the year.

I'm looking forward to rethinking this one!

I know that I'm guilty of wearing the same clothes all the time as well - comfy, practical, washable, while loads of much nicer clothes just hang in the wardrobe. I remember reading about someone "shopping from the wardrobe". I could probably do this for a few years!

That is lovely, lovely colour and material too.

Now that things have quieted down and I have returned to my routine of spending the afternoons reading, writing or doing small creative things I have returned to the former habit of changing clothes before sitting at my desk. It is tempting and easier to continue in the clothes I have been doing my housework in
but it feels different when I don't.
Mind you I still keep one set for best, meaning special occasions, but my second best I am wearing in the afternoons.

Like changing your expression, changing clothes can change your mood.

I remember going through my mother's home economics school notes from the 1940's. In them were instructions that before your husband came home from work, you should change out of your housework clothes, tidy your make-up and hair..and be fresh and happy to greet him after his hard day at work..(not mention how hard you might have been working at home all day.) but maybe we need to do this to greet ourselves also..:-)

I love your sparkly skirt Freda. You get to be the centre of the galaxy whenever you wear it! I too have a coat I like but seldom wear...
Best of luck to all the swimmers (what a lovely idea), especially those in particularly cold bodies of water... I hope there's been enough good sunshine to warm the sea temp for them.

Thank you Lotta! Wet suits are in order. I am so proud of them all.

Love the skirt - I had some very special skirts when I was at art college - a long silver soft velvet one and a similar swirly black one with embroidery. My clothes are quite sober now in comparison - I went through a period at work wearing lots of smart suits - now we dress a bit more relaxed but it does change how you feel. I actually love my stretchy leggings and sloppy jumpers at home and feel most at home in my gardening clothes! I am loving all the new tops with flared sleeves reminds me of the seventies.
In rememberance of Barry and the afternoon we spent chatting with him in your beautiful garden it will be our pleasure to donate a gift to the place he spent his last few days. x

It's nice to remember the art students we were! Viv I am so touched you should remember Barry this way. Thank you so much.
