None of them new - just brought out of the cupboard and greeted like old friends!

i'm thinking now about stocking up with food. Home cooked meals in the freezer or at least the ingredients to make a good meal for guests, tins of beans to bulk up a stew or to have on toast for an emergency meal (ie when I've run out of food or am too tired to make anything).  Covent Garden lovely soups freeze well and are only £1 in the supermarket just now, and I will make more of this easy recipe from my friend Lynne while there are still courgettes available
Cook courgettes, frozen peas and a good handful of mint in some stock till soft. Blend till smooth and drizzle with single cream or a tiny amount of truffle oil to serve.

Any other storecupboard ideas most welcome.

As you know I live a long way from the shops and sometimes I get lazy about shopping and put it off till I have run out of food...

Must do better!

I hope you are enjoying whatever season you are in where you are.

Gnocchi is a good store cupboard standby this time of year. Total comfort food, very versatile, and literally takes two minutes to cook. Lovely with roast veg or just pesto/parmesan if in a hurry or feeling lazy (me often!)

I make a similar soup with onion, courgette, basil and parmesan. Delicious! Lentil dhal is another easy dish to throw together and serve with rice. And then there's Pasta Puttanesca.

I will try your soup, but doesn't lentil dahl take hours of soaking or simmering? I had to look up Pasta Puttanesca!

Red lentils are quick to cook. I use a recipe from Everyday Veg (Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall).

I live close to the shops, but I still get lazy about shopping and put it off until I run out of food. The benchmark is usually when I am down to popcorn and scrambled eggs again for dinner. I have just enough ingredients for harvest chowder tonight, so I can work on my junk journal today instead of running to the store.

I have to go shopping when I run out of eggs and am having meusli to fill me up! I hope you enjoyed your harvest chowder (but what it your junk journal Judy?)).

Just standard supermarket frozen peas I think - handy though fresh would be lovely!

I keep a stock of lentils, dried beans and rice also..and red lentils only take about 10 minutes to cook if you rinse them really well, bring to a boil, strain that foamy water off, and add fresh water to boil up.2 other staples in our cupboard are sardines, and kippers...on toast, they are good for any meal..:-)
How much wood will you need for winter, Freda?

Sardines with some finely chopped onion on toast is a good standby but I must experiment with lentils. I'll need three times this amount plus some smokeless fuel to last the winter Julia.

Are you familiar with V-8? A tomato/vegetable juice. Delicious served very hot half and half with canned consommé. A little dry sherry doesn’t hurt at all.

I've never thought of heating it Kathleen! Will try this. Thank you.
