Simply..an Artist Date....

Have you had an Artist Date with yourself lately?

The point about doing it alone is an interesting one.

Barry and I loved to visit art galleries together, but it was our habit to go around separately and agree to meet at a certain time then take each other to see our favourite thing or things then discuss them over coffee.

Alone and together worked for us.

I'm still planning this week's Date....

A solo date hasn't happened yet but your post made me think about my viewing habits and discover it all depends on who I am with. With one friend we follow the same pattern as yourself and Barry, with another we seperate and meet multiple times and the friend I am meeting on Friday to view a local exhibition will expect us to go round together. The strange thing is I don't remember it ever being discussed. I will now pay more attention to see how each method affects my experience.

For some reason I always naturally end up ahead of Ian when we go to an Art Gallery but then when we go back to point out our 'finds' together we always like the same ones but sometimes for different reasons!
His artists dates at the moment are his concerts - it is the Huddersfield Contemporary Music festival here which is all experimental from living composers. It is a bit too wierd for me to sit through - but I think he is better alone anyway, I would never have taken him to a fahion show as I needed to emerce myself totally in it to really appreciate the cut and detail of garments as they swept by and it takes some concentration just like his music does for him. With Art Galleries at least you can wander around at leisure and go back. We are hoping to get over to the Whitworth Gallery before Xmas.

How lovely to find ways that suit you both. I've not been to the Whitworth since it's makeover - look forward to hearing what you think of it Viv.

Yes quite agree. Alone then together, but also quite happy alone in a gallery. The most difficult scenario is to go with a friend who likes to walk veeery slowly reading each caption on every picture. I am always a room ahead of them and then have to wait or look for them in the crowd. But I am also getting very intolerant in my old age because I can't bear having to listen to people discussing the work loudly as they go round or worse still just gossiping inconsequentially and taking absolutely no notice of the work. The cafe is the place for that. Oh and booming music or narrations from side room installations that bleed through and alter the atmosphere in the whole place. Perhaps I'd better just stay at home!

I'm laughing out loud Lucille - don't stay at home though!

I went to see Le Cubisme at the Pompidou Centre last Saturday with a group of teacher colleagues. We were so fortunate to get in before the public. I walked ahead of the group at one point and found myself quite alone in a room with Giacometti, Picasso, Brancusi ...

I have had to defer my artists date this week but I do have a legitimate excuse! I have been attending a five day textile art retreat. This was actually a course but with major emphasis on independent work. I have explored many processes and techniques and had to think hard as to how to bring them to a conclusion.
Worked nine to five for the five days, so maybe that’s me done for the week?
No? Hmm, didn’t think so. Will do better next week.

You've had a full artists week! That sounds just wonderful and may fill the well for several weeks...

hello all, i am having a good chuckle here, as i can relate to everyone! my husband is in the "read every word" category, so i do find it best to move along on my own and perhaps bring a book for "at the end". we have found a companionable pace that works for us. i find myself deferring to others, when i go with other people, and thus i do not get what i was wanting out of it! and lucille..i'm with you...i get very grouchy when i am with someone who wants to loudly discuss every single aspect (usually with criticism!)...leave me alone to try and experience this piece of art please! one might say we are getting old and hard to get along with..or it might be that we have become far more discriminating with age, and the realization that these opportunities are not endless!

It is wonderful to know what you like and to see that you get it! Definitely more discriminating.

In the vein of the 'intolerant in old age' versus 'the more discriminating' debate: I notice how often older women are described as 'difficult'.
Many of my sewing clients are in their 80s and 90s. I don't find them to be old or 'difficult'.
I find them to be young women who have lived a long time, and who are knowledgeable, competent and have held responsible roles, (and hence couldn't be hood-winked), and know their own preferences (both positive and negative) and quite reasonably assert them.

I think I'll be a 'young woman who has lived a long time' thank you!
