Spotted at the barbecue - a golden ringed dragonfly (I think?) I have just learned that a dragonfly holds its wings open when at rest, and a damselfly holds them closed....

Thanks to Jennie and Ross for the great photographs.

More on dragonflies and damselflies here.

Fabulous photographs! I've been making dragonflies this week, although having followed your link I think mine may be a mixture of species!

It looks like it is grinning in the third picture. :) Great photos.

I expect it was laughing its head off at us peering at it with our cameras...

What a unique dragonfly! I wasn't sure, with just a quick glance, if I was seeing a dragonfly or a bumblebee.
Came across a tiny jar...was just getting ready to toss, when I remembered your small jar with flowers & how cute it was. Miss Minimalist might not be pleased I kept it, but Marie Kondo would because it gives me joy. That's what happens when different styles of minimalism clash!

And that's why we have to come up with our very own version Cathy - one to suit us perfectly!

My yard is sate w dragonflies in the day and fireflies at night. I called the daytimers only "dragon", but after reading your post, I will properly call some "damsel". Thanks for informative tidbit.

I have never seen a firefly - how wonderful. Barry thought they were magical.

Dragons and damsels! I think the names will appeal to your son.

Though of course they may be called something else entirely in Portuguese?

In Portuguese, the names are Libélulas and Libelinhas! Also very appealing names, namely because of the repetition of Ls which make the tongue curl as if it's dancing in the mouth.
