Waiting for pianist Rudolf Buchbinder and a programme of Beethoven and Bruckner at the Berlin Philharmonic.

Breathtaking!

I've been given the gift of 12 months of the Berlin Phil live concerts available on my laptop - tonight Sir Simon Rattle conducting Wagner - extra exciting now that I have actually been there.  See their interesting website here to find out more.

Do you have a favourite musical experience? I do agree with Penny who said in yesterday's comments that music can transcend everything.

Not quite Beethoven, but about 20 years ago I saw Beauty & The Beast at the Pantages Theater in Toronto Canada. I couldn't help it, during the song Be My Guest, the tears just flowed...the music, the costumes...it was magical. J was with me & seeing my tears said he was crying too, but for a totally different reason. Guess it wasn't magical for him. lol

Wonderful to be given the gift of music.

As for a memorable musical experience, it happened twice with the same artist and song, but in entirely different settings. The first was during a church service when the church choir master (who also happened to be the regional school music director) asked two former students, who were then at university, to perform "Ave Maria" on violins during communion. Just the two of them. No other accompaniment. It was so heartstoppingly beautiful that I starting crying almost from the first notes and continued long after the last one. Little did I imagine that just a few months later I would ask them to return to play it again--but this time at my father's funeral. It was his favorite song. As beautiful as the first time I heard it, the music poured over us all like a soothing balm and the tears fell.

Breathtaking is the word! And what a lovely gift. I haven't been to a concert for such a long time - I must remedy that. My village (and others in the county) has 'Flicks in the Sticks' that sometimes streams live concerts, ballets, plays etc to the village hall which is a good resource for rural areas.

Waking to hear the Schubert Impromptu No 2 in an old house in Ireland in the middle of the night. I had never heard it before. I was transfixed and couldn't understand where it was coming from.
In the morning I discovered that it was my friend's insomniac mother listening on her cassette player!
