Wonderful colours, patterns and textures at Scalpsie Bay on the Island of Bute.

I helped with the local beach clean this morning where we collected a lot less litter than in previous years. It could be because there have been fewer big storms this winter, though I like to think it may be because people are becoming more aware and careful....

Have you noticed a difference on a beach or in the countryside near you?

I see far fewer people littering in my local town now than I remember as a child. The beach I spend a lot of time on when I'm in Cornwall is well looked after by early morning dog walkers who pick up anything left by human or tide (or dog!). There are some odd things found though. A bright pink wig, a full set of underwear, a lone walking boot (how did they get home?), pieces of the old shipwreck, and various bits of lego from the 'lego lost at sea'... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-28367198
Last year a lady from the village found an ancient sword sticking up in the sandy cove. She removed it for safety but then had to walk all the way back home brandishing it!

Sadly we are far from beaches and countryside. So lovely to see these images taken on Bute. We used to go there on family holidays back in the 60s. I must go back.

We have alsorts washed up on the beach after the winter - sometimes some quite dangerous items are found in the bay that were dumped in the sea after the war.
Incidentally the flood at our cottage washed away my vintage zinc planter, a watering can and two white plastic patio chairs into the sea - anyone seen them?

The worst litter on the beach always occurs after the storms. I will always pick up plastic debris when I see it on the beach. Do you still have someone that regularly cleans the beach all year around? Sarah x

Sadly Eric has moved away Sarah. But I think quite a few people do collect when they are out walking. (I do.)

Alas, living inland the only wreckage I find is the expected detritus accumulating against the fence in the back garden after a windy trash day pick-up: drinks cups, plastic bag from the grocer's, candy wrapper, newspaper. Oh for a pink wig, a patio chair, or an ancient sword! A message in a bottle would be nice too.
