Simply..comfort books....

..along with comfort food are the order of the day as 40mph winds and rain give the garden, and me, a shock.

Thank you so much for your comments on yesterday's post (and for the phrase 'comfort books' PennyL!) I am enjoying investigating the book titles and have already ordered Wintering by Katherine May - thankyou Gwendoline.

I didn't want The Salt Path to end. It was a thoroughly good read. Raynor Winn's next book launch has been postponed sadly (see here) but will I am sure be worth waiting for.

Do share more book suggestions here - a friend has already consulted them and I am still enjoying exploring them with a view to ordering another one or two, and my book group are reading The Salt Path.

Or justt say a quick hello - there is comfort in knowing you are all okay :-)

There are often gales when the oriental poppies are out but so far they are still standing..

The book I want to recommend is 'A London Child of the 1870's', the first in a series of autobiographies by Molly Hughes. I first heard of it on Woman's Hour and liked the sound of it, so went to buy it. I literally had to prise it out of the hands of the bookseller who was deep into it and didn't want to part with it.

Since then it has been read by my husband, my sisters, my brother, his wife, his daughters, his son. I don't know anyone who didn't like this book. Molly Hughes' life wasn't easy, but she comes across as eternally optimistic, clever and funny.

Oh I do hope you enjoy "Wintering". Even after putting it down, little phrases and 'pictures' keep resonating for me which is a good sign I think.

Although I got Wintering a few months ago I decided to postpone starting till September as that's where the book begins (September through March), in this way -with a short interval of coming together
in September- it thus awaits me after finishing The Wild Remedy, How Nature mends us, a Diary by Emma Mitchell. I'm reading that in monthly instalments now (it spans October till September). It's nice to find myself in the same season as the book is in.
If you haven't read Nan Shepherd's The Living Mountain (1977), that is nature writing at its best, about her journeys into the Cairngorm mountains.

Ooh they both sound promising especially as the Cairngorms hold memories for me. Thank you. I am lackadaisical in this regard and I don't worry too much about being seasonally in sync with my reading material. As witnessed by my tendency to pick-up the Ivington Diaries at any time, open at random, and find something good.

I wondered if 'wintering' in the metaphorical sense mgiht be relevent to these locked down times....thank you for your other suggestions too Cath - I can personally recommend your recommendations!

I definitely take these things metaphorically! I must try Cath's way but it had not occurred to me before. Also Kathleen Jamie's "Surfacing" has been helping me through this month so I can agree with that too!
