Simply..Design Your Garden Course

I have been posting questions I ask clients when I am commissioned to design a garden - so they will amount to an online Design Your Own Garden Course if you like to follow all the suggestions!

Here is the fourth question I ask. The answers of course are not just ticking the box - a lot of discussion goes on at this stage - perhaps you can discuss the questions with someone?

This one is another check list -

What kind of plants do you want?

Trees
Shrubs
Herbaceous perennials
Annuals/biennials
Scented flowers
Groundcover
Climbers
Evergreens
Topiary
Foliage interest
Alpines
Flowers for cutting
Flowers to attract wildlife/birds/butterflies
Containers with bedding
Bulbs
Exotics
Other?

Don't tick them all! Unless you have a lot of space and a gardener (or two.)

Flowers for picking are a priority for me - even if just tiny posies..

That is the exact trap we have fallen in to over and over, Freda....we are greedy guts...and we just have to have it all...without the designer's eye, and expertise to go with it, it just ends up a huge hodge podge too..we've inherited each of our gardens from previous owners and for us, what was the most depressing was that the soil had neer been cared for. so even in 60 year old houses, we were starting from scratch with the foundation of it all. The other depressing thing was watching how, when we sold each of those houses, the next owners ripped it all out and put in grass or paving!
So i guess, if i had to say what would i want most it would be to inherit lovingly tended soil.

Julia I am so glad you mentioned this - because I haven't! I take it for granted people will care for the soil and realise that it is key to successful gardening - but sometimes it is so important to state the obvious....that without good husbandry (such an old fashioned word!) there would be no gardens. Thank you.

This is so kind of you Freda. I've never had a proper plan for the garden, I've just done spontaneous bits every now and then on a £0 budget! That's a really good point about the soil too, and something I confess I know very little about.

Such a good point of discussing these questions with someone... Honestly, I just wanted to check everything, ha! Making choices will be a huge part of this process and I personally know very little in order to make decisions. Thank you so much for your guidance Freda.
