Simply..Doing My Own Thing....

Note the capital letters. They indicate that I am serious about this!

In this month of being away from home and thinking and writing, something has clicked inside my head. Yet another light bulb has gone off! I've reached another click point as Marie Kondo would put it.

I've decided that, as from now, I am  doing  my  own  thing.

Not anyone else's thing. Not the world's idea of what I should do, or my friends' idea, or other artists' idea, or society's idea, or my peers' idea, or the media's idea (I really have lost it where apostrophies are concerned!).....

Freedom and joy beckon.

Excuse me while I go and put on some loud music. Well not very loud as it is 5.05am and my husband is still asleep.

I am now listening to Mitsuko Uchida playing the divine Schubert Piano Sonatas...

Homeward bound.... do you get excited about going home when you've been away?

And one you can only give yourself perhaps? (As in no-one else is going to give you it..) I'm so excited!

Questions tumbling over in my mind. If this wasn't so personal, and here probably not the space at all to write more, I would ask could you tell more f.i. how did the time away from home contribute? Was it a reward focussing on writing brought? Did the writing bring you joy most of all? What form will the freedom take? I fully understand that this is not the space to answer, please see it as a way of sharing your excitement and being happy about it.

Thank you Cath. I will be writing about it - it helps me to process it, and yes both the writing and the time away (and probably the Kondoing) contributed...)

oh freda! this is exciting...i agree with cath...would love to know what precipitated this post...what meandering path lead to this joyful outburst!....as for homesickness...no, i have never felt it. but i can just imagine how anxious you must be to return to your beloved garden and loch, no matter how delightful your english "home" has been. how did the book editing go?

A meandering path indeed! Blogging is so good for thinking things through, which is what I will be doing over the next few weeks. So nice to be home!

I'll echo Julia & Cath.

As for doing your own thing, don't you think minimalism is part of that? Consumerism, consumptionism (is that a word?) materialism are all part of the norm for most. Consciously having less & being content with less is an enigma for many. We're doing our own thing by leaving a lot of that behind.

Oh I do agree about minimalism not being the norm, by any means, and we are doing our own thing by pursuing it. That's why it's nice to talk with like minds...

Hi Freda,

what a wonderful conclusion you have arrived at. I don't spend a lot of time away from my beloved home, but almost every time I do I achieve clarity about my life. I think it's the lack of regular distraction - bills to pay, laundry to do, homework to supervise, clients to worry about..

Yes! Time away is so valuable and I've never spent this amount away before. It was so worthwhile in so many ways. I loved it.

I do think you've made room for it. The minimalist processes clear space in our very consumerist world and all its influences for us to emerge! Go Freda :)

As for coming and going, I am happy about both and am lucky enough to have more than one "home" to look forward to returning to… if I had to travel constantly or go to places where there's no time to enjoy, I would prefer to be at home, though!

Kondoing played its part! I had so much time to enjoy the stay in the beautiful cottage, but home is so special isn't it.

Freedom ... Joy ... What beautiful words they are separately and unbeliebably powerful as a pair. Enjoy being home and doing your thing Freda! I love coming home, so I can reflect some more on the time away.

I am looking forward now to that reflective time, and determined to make sure not to get too busy to do it!

Forgive me Freda, but haven't you always rather pleased yourself??? Sorry that sounds rude - you know what I mean.

Ah, you've only known me since I got started pleasing myself Liz - it was a long tortuous road to get here!

I wish I were able to do my own thing, however, I'm being stalked and harassed. Cyberbullying is part of it.

This is probably the last post I will make on any blog for a while until I'm able to get my life back.

I'm so sad to hear this Alison and hope you will be able to take all the steps you can to get past this.
