..are of necessity taking centre stage.

(I took lots of photographs in our first few days here in Venice.)

Some years ago I read an amusing book called The Politics of Washing: Real Life In Venice by Polly Coles about an English couple with four young children who moved to Venice for a year.

Heather wouldn't let me post a photo of our washing drying on the balcony.

I love lines of laundry - it’s like bunting celebrating the ordinary. Particularly like the blue shirts against the mustard yellow building under the sky with the same shades of blue.

Now that is good - 'bunting celebrating the ordinary'!

I'm with Heather! Wouldn't want my pants to be visually hanging online for all eternity. :)

Great posts from Venice. Am hoping that the positivity and calm might find its way here ,where an undercurrent of fear and panic pervades. You are definitely happier in Venice, particularly with beautiful washing lines and shops selling cheap wine being a necessity!xx

I love the lack of embarrassment, in hanging washing for all to see.
A recognition that we're all the same, having the need to clothe our variously shaped bodies in layers.

I do love washing lines - maybe it's linked to fond memories of childhood. I love the fresh smell of washing that has dried in the breeze. As I grew up in Scotland, it wasn't always possible to hang out washing because of the rainy climate, so my mum also had a pulley in the kitchen. I remember that the clothes that dried indoors smelled of cooking!

when I was able, I hung my sheets on the line. Ummmm...what a wonderful fresh smell when I put them on the bed. I would hang other clothes out, too...but never my undies! some things must remain a secret. lol!

Well, it looks as if we are going to be confined to barracks too. Yes, envisage cleaning & sorting, painting the banisters, weeding, making cakes. Hope you're writing at least 5,000 words a day...

If i may, i will jump in again to comment how we are all, in a time of perceived crisis, responding to reminders of our safe childhood pasts....the mindful, and thrifty practice of hanging out the wash. Remember, too, how the sun sanitized the wash...our grandmothers knew best!
