Simply..drawing on a large scale....

I began today's three tasks with the one I really wanted to do.

Drawing with the lawn mower to establish the areas I will allow to grow longer this year (one of the fun aspects of this is that you can change it every year, or even from one cut to the next).

I have written often about 'differential mowing'. It's one of my favourite creative design techniques, and to cut down on mowing time I am creating larger areas in both back and front gardens this year. I am lucky I think in that many wild plants (weeds!) still exist in our grass areas as they were created from fields and we have very rarely used fertilisers and weedkilllers, and then only on small areas.

I am paying someone to help with the grass but I wanted to establish the all-important shapes myself.

Not quite right yet, but there is always another chance at this...the garden is essentially rectangular but I like to incorporate organic shapes and creating a balance between the two is the creative challenge for me.

The longer grasses and flowers are good for the insects and the bare patch will soon be sown with a wildflower seed mix to give me a nursery of wild flowers to play with.

I think I can feel my passion for the garden slowly returning with this project.

Do you use wildflowers in your garden?

This is how mowing becomes fun! I like the shapes you've created Freda - it's a challenge to make them pleasing to the eye from lots of different angles isn't it? I'm still modifying mine. Nature is very kind in erasing any mistakes quickly at this time of year though.

I hope you have lots of lovely things in your wildflower mix - a friend used one last year and got nothing but dandelions, nettles and thistles!

Yes nature is kind in that way! I've chosen a mix which has lots of things which grow around here...(which could mean dandelions, nettles and thistles - but doesn't I hope).

What fun you are having! I would like to say we used wildflowers but actually they use us as their home. We have them whether or not we want them! The main ones are pink campion, blue Alkanet, foxglove, forget me not, wild geranium, yellow iris, Fuchsia and garlic and the very large thistle. It is too acid for the common red poppy both here and in Scotland and the white moonpenny is a bit hit and miss too but we have the beautiful tall pink poppies with the silvery grey leaves. I love them all in moderation if I did not thin them out a bit during the year we would be over run! Your wild flowers on the other hand seem to have that wispy delicate quality you find in a meadow - mine are more the big tough thugs!

What a lovely collection Viv - all 'volunteers' as my friend calls them?

I'm going with the answer: I use them :)
One can sense you're having fun and the shapes make the garden so alive.

My garden has been described as billowing and flowing - and I think it is the shapes that create those effects. It is fun, as is allowing or growing wild flowers.
