Simply..filling the gap....

My temporary solution to the problem of the great space left by the loss of a lovely viburnum 'Maresii' (see this post) was to paint some canes and make a wigwam to fill the space.

We uprooted some golden hop - the fastest growing thing in the garden, but it didn't like being moved and won't cover the structure till later, so I added a clematis which I had in a pot.

Any day now I'll change the subject!

I've just realised that your blue canes complete your trio of primary colours! Red furniture, yellow gate... Was that the original intention Freda, or has it just evolved that way? Will keep my fingers crossed for a golden hop growth spurt!

Definitely evolved Lotta. Red gate perhaps 15 years ago, red furniture soon after, yellow gate maybe 10 years later and blue canes because although I wanted a rich colour I didn't want the wigwam to stand out too much...

I agree with Cathy ! Think your gap filler is a great idea. We lost several well established plants in the cold snap in March and it's hard to choose something for the gaps.The colours in your garden have set me thinking about a yellow gate andI wondered what shade you used for yours ? Envy those close enough to visit for your open day.

It's hard to loose something that has taken a long time to mature. I'm not sure whether to buy a new shrub or encourage what little growth is left but the wigwam will do for now. I shall look in the shed tomorrow for the name of the paint Mary.

The label is faded! It is Dulux in the brightest purest yellow I could find.
