Simply..Fitter....

..with a little help from a great new website fitfor15in15!

Simply Fitter and Simply Move are very neglected categories on this blog. (I've just looked at them myself. You won't find much inspiration here I'm afraid, and very few posts - though the piano stair post which some of you may remember still delights - click on the link in this post)

I am so lucky to have reasonable health and to be fairly fit, and I am fitter than I was just a few years ago. I eat very healthily, am not overweight, and can still touch my toes! But I'm not sporty in the slightest and am inclined to laziness. (My first post about exercise, or lack of it, is here.)

Angela's daily blog deals with mentally fit, nutritionally fit, and physically fit - I like the distinctions and have no worries about the first two - but I do need a bit of encouragement on the third.

Even I can manage the 15 minutes a day minimum that she suggests!

I took a brisk 25 minute walk in the forest today, grudging the time it took to get all togged up -  it was below freezing all day today -  disliking the bulky clothes (I know, I need new outdoor gear!) but within minutes I was enjoying just moving along. The snow has all but disappeared there although more is forecast for tomorrow.

My word for last year was WALK, and I did, often. It surprised me how little it took to get fitter, but I'm even more surprised at how quickly I get unfit when I stop!

It never quite became a habit...

Do you have an exercise habit?

Perhaps you will join me in my visits to Fit for 15 in 15?

The pictures are beautiful. You are so lucky to live by a forest. I was fortunate enough to grow up by one, but now live in the city, and often find I crave the peace that being among lots of trees brings.

Walking is my mainstay. I don't own a car and walk a lot to get around. There's a neat fitness studio nearby that I like to go to that does classes that are various forms of ballet, general exercise and yoga.

It's funny you mention the Fit for 15 idea. I was just thinking about someone I know who gets up at 5 am every morning to fit in a 1/2 hour walk and was thinking about doing the same (or maybe getting up at 5:15 am to give myself a bit of extra snooze time!). Anyway, I'll be joining you, although I think I'll push myself a bit and call it Fit for double 15 (or 30 mins per day).

I like the variety in Fit for 15 - I get very quickly bored with exercise routines! Glad you will join in Alison..

Hi Freda,

I have a daily walk with my dogs for 45 minutes. Last year I was taking them to the dog park and lost a lot of fitness. There's a lovely community at the dog park, but we spend a lot more time talking than walking! So this year I'm out on the pavement.

Recently I've added yoga before breakfast. This will be challenging when I go back to work next week, and particularly as the mornings get colder. But...I feel mentally and physically so much better when I do yoga, so I'm going to just do it! I leave my yoga mat on the couch the night before, and somehow that's enough to prevent me slacking off.

Your forest looks so beautiful - I bet you feel alive after a below zero walk in that!

Dogs and children are good to make you get out. I don't have either at home now. Yoga I like, late evening for me..and yes I did feel alive!

I still do my daily afternoon walk for about half an hour - and really miss it when I can't get out because of really wet weather etc. It has become part of my daily routine and according to the newspapers last week 20 mins a day walking is the best thing for keeping you fit and your body in working order. When I was a lot younger I used to be an exercise fanatic, swimming, badminton exercise classes and following a daily strict regime at home - as I get older it is reduced to daily walking and trying not to sit down too much.

My (almost) daily walk deserves to be called a habit. My husband and I both practice Chi Neng Qi Gong and want that to become a habit this year. Practice every other day would be very good.

I liked the idea of Tai Chi - but I don't like the idea of the 30 mile round trip to a class....I will have to look up Chi Neng Qi Gong - how nice that you both do it!

The piano stair looks so much fun! I feel fitter since moving and living up a even steeper hill than before and dog walking again! Sarah x

A hill and a dog - a good combination Sarah!

Thank you so much, Freda, for introducing your readers to the concept of fitfor15in15. I hope they enjoy a laugh and find some inspiration from the various exercises, walks and thoughts. All it takes is a minimum of 15 minutes a day. Some days you have the energy and time to do more, but on the days you don't, 15 minutes is still achievable. Your yoga room looks divine!
