Simply..flowering trees....

At Benmore Botanic Gardens today I was struck by the amount of blossom, white blossom, on quite large trees..

Clethra barbinervis has a delicate, pretty scent and an elegant shape.

Hydrangea paniculata 'Grandiflora' manages to hold its own against the gunnera in this lovely composition.

The euchryphias are smothered in scented flowers and buzzing with bees.

No blossom of course but I am always awestruck by the avenue of sequoiadendron giganteum. The seats just visible at the far end give you an idea of the scale!

On our way to the Von Gimborn arboretum the sky changed from cloudy to grey and then it started to rain. A drizzle, a shower, a pouring. Not having brought raincoat nor umbrella, plans needed to be changed so we made a tour (by car) on a nature route we remembered to have -now deep purple- heatherfields at each side.
Pity we missed the delicate scent of the Cleta barbinervis, the arboretum has them too, but at least now the scent has a name thanks to you.
And preferring heather in the wild, the heatherfields were a joy to see too.

That sounds like a special day to remember. Lovely description of it Cath.

Just behind our house, we have a Rose of Sharon (very tall shrub+10 ft) which has lovely deep pink blooms at the moment. It is closely nestled with several other trees--a poplar (ugh), a Paw-Paw-which is currently bearing fruit--and a tall pine tree which is shedding 6" pine needles and large, very pointy pine cones all over our deck. None of this was a planned thing, just how they have grown wild. Not quite as pretty as the botannical garden arrangements.

Another lovely word picture - it is nice to visualise where you are. What we call Rose of Sharon is a hypericum with bright yellow flowers. Makes you see why latin names are useful!

That avenue is wonderful. It looks like it might be the kind of garden that has spectacular elements in every season. Have you been there in the snow or frost Freda?

Azaleas and rhododendron in spring, 50 shades of green in summer, spectacular autumn colour and a winter wonderland when it snows - and only half an hour from home. We're lucky to have it so near.
