Simply..heartened....

I was so heartened by your encouraging and kind comments about my piano ambitions! Thank you! (And for the giggles in yesterday's comments.)

I was thinking about why learning to play Bach is such a real pleasure just now and came to the conclusion it is because it doesn't really matter. It demands a lot of concentration so takes me 'out of myself' as the saying goes. No one is listening, or expecting anything of me. There are no deadlines, nothing depends on my success. I don't ever plan to perform it and if I never learn to play another piece of music that will be fine. I will sit no exams or tests. It doesn't cost anything except time and and I only spend about 15 minutes at a time on it, sometimes once a day, sometimes more. It is purely for fun and just for me.

Do you do anything at all which is purely for fun and only for you?

If not, whyever not? And can you think of anything you would like to try?

May I add my encouragement?! I think your plan is great!
As we have a celtic harp standing around, I have been planning to learn to play it but never got anywhere so far over the last couple of years with so much going on around me - maybe my motivation would be greater for the clarinet, which I've always wanted to learn? But then, not sure I can exchange a woolly hat for a clarinet... ;)
Onwards and upwards! My greatest admiration for going it alone!

Ask for a clarinet for Christmas Swiss Rose! Your family will be delighted to know what to get you..

Your thoughts about why learning to play Bach are so good, so important, so right. I cannot find the exact word this afternoon to pinpoint what I think when reading them.
Answering your question is even more difficult.

Hmmm...something for fun? I wrote Lotta the other day I might knit myself a hat as part of my whimsical winter plan--thinking it would be fun. So I pulled out my needles and some wool from my stash (which hasn't been touched in a few years). So far I have cast on a hat (in the round) four separate times, knit the first eight rows and then have ended up frogging each try. Though I have made this same hat pattern at least three times, it seems I have forgotten how to read a lace pattern--the section after the first eight rows. But, I will persevere. Whether it will ever be fun will depend on whether or not I ever figure out what I am doing wrong and complete the hat.

Oh good luck Mary. Maybe it would be nice just in garter stitch? I can't find a hat I like at the moment so maybe I should knot one..

Just decided today I will do one thing purely for fun this winter. It's something rather frivoulos and surely completely out of my confort zone but I'm actually quite excited, as in "am I really going to do this?"

Do tell what it is! I sit at the piano thinking 'Am I really doing this' and it makes me smile a big smile..
