Simply..holiday....

The very essence of an ideal holiday for me..being out of doors in gentle sunshine, eating out, a total media break, a good book/gallery/concert...simple requirements.

This can be city or country, abroad or at home, any season, and for a day or a week. I could add no timetable, the freedom to change my mind on a whim, and I would always want my camera.

I prefer short breaks and like to think that is because I love home and don't need to 'escape' it to have a holiday.

Are you also torn between returning to places you love and going somewhere new?

I enjoy quite frequent changes of scene and prefer the company of family and close friends to that of strangers, though I'm happy with my own company too.

Childhood holidays at the seaside, away from the city grime were very special and keenly anticipated once a year events, though when an aunt moved to rural Wigtownshire we spent Easters and some of summer there in the bracing air with wide sandy beaches to ourselves and the freedom to go and explore on our own.

I love holidays.

I have two upcoming trips and they could not be more different: definitely something new and something old.

In October, my husband and I will celebrate a special anniversary by flying out west to visit the US national parks in Southern Utah (e.g Zion, Arches, Bryce Canyon, etc.). Glorious scenery. All nature all the time.

In January, I will fly across the Pond for a week-long solo visit to London to celebrate my retirement (end of December). London is the one place I visit repeatedly—and almost always by myself. My mother was a Londoner--a British war bride. Our family moved to London from the US when I was just two and I spent the majority of my childhood there. It is more like home to me than any other place I have ever lived (more than a dozen). I love the variety of architecture, walking everywhere--doing what I want, when I want. I already have my ticket to Joshua Bell's concert. Might see some theatre/dance and certainly will visit museums and galleries (started a list of exhibitions). I stay at the same hotel on these visits, just a block from the Tube and within Zone 1. It has fully stocked kitchen (with a kettle and even a teapot!) so I can pick up my breakfast goods and evening meals at nearby Waitrose or M&S, if I am exhausted at the end of each day (I am). This really cuts food expenses and helps one eat properly. It even has a dishwasher :). I hope to make a day trip up to York during this visit, too. Can't wait.

A lot to look forward to - which is another nice thing about holidays! I wonder if I could be in York in January...

Would be wonderful if we could meet up. Thinking of either Thur, Jan 11 or Mon, Jan 15. Would either of these work for you? Could do Sunday, too, but I have experienced the British rail system and their weekend work projects..:(

I love holidays and I love home, but I find the transition between the two quite difficult. A sudden adjustment from one world to another...

Holidays have been out of budget for the last few years but I've been lucky to have family living in Cornwall up until a few months ago so I've made the most of my visits there. I do love Cornwall and I'm missing my Cornish holidays now! Must take myself for a day out somewhere soon.

Single day holidays can be wonderful too - refreshing and inexpensive. (Remember Sundays?)

Your questions cut to the core of our dilemma, Freda...we love our holiday cottage and have waited 30 years to be here all summer...but now...we would love to travel..but we HATE to miss even one day at the lake..even a bad day here is a great day!
