I love that my home is in a place where I can leave out an honesty pot with plants for sale!

People ask if the money gets stolen. Sometimes plants go and there is no money in the pot. Invariably it appears within the next day or so from someone who didn't have money on them at the time but didn't want to miss a particular plant, or it has been put through the letterbox (perhaps by people who can't believe it won't be stolen!)

In over a decade of doing this the change I keep in the jar was stolen once only, and the thief was kind enough to put the lid back on the jar and leave it by the roadside. I reckoned they must have needed the 80p more than I did....

What do you like or dislike about the area you live in?

we have the same country frienliness and honesty where we are too freda. and it is a treasure! if we are away and there is storm, our neighbors come right over to our place to check it out, and report back to us. the local famer stand has the same honesty box, and he says he has rarely has had problem. most people are good. it is our media that would lead us to believe otherwise.

It's great that you can do that. In the old days, my grandmother (and all the neighbours), would leave a bag and some money by the front door at night, to pay for daily fresh bread that would be there in the morning. I never heard of any money missing, but somehow the costume got lost. I too believe most people are honest and good, and it's a pity we limit ourselves in so many ways because of our fears.

What a lovely custom! The question of trust and the influence of the media is a fascinating question and a complex one, but I'm with your grandmother and her good neighbours...I'd love to get fresh bread delivered in the morning!

Numerous folks with large veggie gardens or chicks (for the eggs) sell via the honesty jar route. Last year, our little community was appalled when 1 person stole a jar. But that is the only time.

It's a lovely custom, and I suppose we must just take the chance of the odd theft and be glad it is so rare!

In our previous home we did occasionally have milk missing from the doorstep in the morning. I love the way that people here, have time to stop and have conversations even with strangers and there is such a community spirit. Events seem to be put on for the locals and if tourists want to join in too that's a bonus, previously it was the other way around! sarah x

It's life isn't it! Having time to talk is also to be treasured - you can't really have a community spirit without it. It sounds like a great place to live Sarah.
