I have been enjoying listening to the book of this name on BBC Sounds (still available). Especially episode two which is about Erasmus - a hero of mine.

I was lucky enough to be an Erasmus student, studying in Sweden and Venice , one of the ten million who benefitted from this wonderful European exchange programme, sadly a victim of Brexit.

Erasmus lived a life of travel, reading and friendship - which sounds as good a way to live to me in the 21C as it was to Erasmus in the 15C and 16C.

Who are your heroes from history? And why?

Well! Anyone could spend all day working on that one; and still forget favourites. So will limit myself to the five that first come to mind.. Richard III, Christopher \Marlowe, Simon Wiesenthal, Stravinsky. Josephine Tey. And even as I write that, I feel guilty abut all the omissions!

She is one of the greats of crime fiction - but her work is unlike anyone else's. Scottish, she died far too young, but her books have become classics. The one you heard of is The Daughter Of Time, which ha turned generations of readers into supporters of Richard !!!.A reclusive single lady, she alo wrote hit play a Gordon Daviot. Nicola Upson has wtittne a series of novels fearuring 'Josephine' - actuallu Elizabeth MacKintosh as her period detective.

It's great to hear about your time on Erasmus scholarship, Freda. I agree that their loss is one of the saddest things about Brexit. While it's good to honour inspiring individuals, I feel that we need to remember that their achievements wouldn't have been possible without the work of many others whose names may have been lost. Like Claudette Colvin, the 15 year old who started the Selma bus boycott before Rosa Parks

I don't know how you guys have managed to choose so quickly ! Am still mulling over the options here. Perhaps the honest answer is , too many people to choose a single figure !

Liz G - thanks for the tip about tey's book about richard III. i just saw the movie, the lost king, & am now interested in reading about him. i checked my library's card catalog & the daughter of time is on the shelf! heading there shortly.
