Forced indoors by the weather I finished reading Lara by Anna Pasternak. A fascinating and well-researched account of the life of Boris Pasternak's mistress Olga, the real life inspiration for Lara in Dr Zhivago which I've been re-reading.

It put my little flowery troubles into perspective in a most striking way! (Any good book recommendations would be welcome ...)

If you have been reading Live Simply Simply Live since way back you may remember this moving video. Though entirely different it made me think of opening the garden as a kind of tribute to Barry who helped me create it - gardening was a shared passion from when we first met. We created many gardens together, and he loved this one as much as I did, and do. I couldn't have made it without him.

I have breakfasted outside for a month or so but yesterday I had to bring a tiny bit of outdoors indoors for my repast.

I'm on the hunt for a good book myself. Reading a lot but nothing particularly interesting. After a long wait from our library consortium, Essays by Montaigne finally showed on my e-reader, but haven't started reading them yet. My library trip on Tuesday was with my 4 year old grandson...he ended up with a pile of books, but wasn't too interested in letting Nanny find something in the boring part of the library (e.g. no great play area in the adult section).

PS - I couldn't get the video to work for me...kept buffering. Will try again later. But I can see how opening the garden is definitely a tribute to Barry from you. A labour of love.

Well, freda, as you know, there is nothing to top plum johnson’s book: they left us everything..except the new edition (2016), which includes an epilogue that is such gorgeous! For those of you interested in reading this marvelous book, look it up on amazon.ca, or amazon.co,uk....and do not buy the usa edition that has the red glasses on the front..because you will miss out on the epilogue....buy the one with the colorful bathing suits..:-)
i loved the video!!! Loved it! And sending warmest wishes for a better day tomorrow than forecast..you are being awfully brave about this...but there is certainly nothing to be done about weather!

My wishes for you for tomorrow:
- if a cloudless sunny day is not possible; patches of blue and spells of sun to illuminate your garden;

- if that is not possible: the kind of cloudy sky that makes people admire the careful choice of colours among the green even more;

- visitors unafraid of a drop of rain, appreciative of the many hours invested in cutting edges, lifting skirts, painting, weeding moss, talking to plants and all things necessary to achieve this vibrant
loving tribute to Barry.

- Whatever the day brings, I most of all hope you can lean back knowing you put all you have into this gift of love and sense the beauty and presence.

What a lovely video! And congratulations to you, because whatever the weather has had to say on the matter, you achieved your goal of creating a beautiful garden for open day, and a wonderful tribute to Barry. And any horizontal bits will be best viewed from the hammock... an excellent excuse to lie down! I hope you have a wonderful weekend Freda, and lots of appreciative visitors. Wish I could be there in person, but I've enjoyed seeing it all come together on your blog.

i'm rereading alice Steinbach's without reservations (probably for the 3rd time, so there's my book recommendation.) in it she talks for just a couple paragraphs about Gertrude Jekyll (jeekill, not jeckul) and her museum of garden history. I think this is in cornwall somewhere. have you heard of it/her?

I enjoyed the video too. hope lots of guests come to see all your work & they enjoy it as much as we do.

Dear Freda, I think that there's a benefit in the visitors seeing things not quite as planned. Everyone's garden does get rain-bashed and wind-blown, but yours will still be beautiful in that situation.

Saturday morning - Freda, just to say I'm thinking of you, having just heard the news of the second fire at Glasgow School of Art. I remember how shocked you were four years ago, and this just piles on the sadness for all the people who loved that building and did so much to fund raise.

Your eating breakfast outside everyday has inspired me. I’m going to sit on my front porch for one of my meals for the next few weeks. (Well maybe not Monday, 98 degrees and humidity in upper 80%). Purpose- enjoy the season, not just let all this sunshine pass me by. Simple
