Simply..larks ascending....

A short stay with dear friends, some good sleep and some glorious weather have combined to refresh me somewhat, and I am taken up with a delightful bird watching experience.

A skylark has nested just by our path to the shore. In sixteen years here we have not heard or seen skylarks. Sitting on the shore last week I thought I heard one faintly, but said to myself No, it can't be, we don't get them here. But then I spotted one and patiently observed it and found the nest with two speckled eggs. They should hatch any day now.

I am being very quiet around it (and will probably be very quiet on the blog for a bit too).

Perhaps you will enjoy the sound of the skylark on this page , and the sound of Nicola Benedetti playing The Lark Ascending.

Are there any birds nesting near you?

Dear Freda
Hope everything is ok and you are feeling a little better in yourself. I have missed you. There is nothing like listening to the spiralling sound of the lark, although they are often too far up in the sky to see. We have wrens and bluetits and blackbirds nesting in the garden so you have to be careful not to disturb them which means certain parts of the garden are out of bounds. I always feel honoured that they choose my garden to nest in as though they know they will be safe there.

I too feel privileged that birds nest in my garden. Great tits and blue tits this year, but the swallows have not returned to their nest yet..

We put up Bluebird nesting boxes in our front and backyard. Both are occupied. Bluebirds are very pretty--so pretty they like to look at themselves. The one in the backyard spends a great deal of time perched on the side mirror of my husband's truck parked near the back garage, while the one in the front yard likes to sit on the door handle of the front glass storm door. They bothspend hours "talking" and looking at themselves in the reflections.

I had to look up bluebirds - how beautiful they are! Lovely to have them nesting, and kind of you to provide mirrors!

our chickadee nest failed. always sad to watch & wait...and wait...and wait only to discover for whatever reason, the parents have abandoned the nest. I've been watching & listening to Baltimore orioles flitting around in the tree in the back. I hope they build a nest even though it will be almost impossible to see let alone watch.

good to have you back...hope you're feeling rested & refreshed.

More to look up. I have heard of golden orioles....I hope they nest near you, you would see the young once they hatched (larks have not hatched yet...) It is nice to be back.

yes, it does warm the heart to have birds nesting nearby...:-)
at our cottage, rural ontario, we have a pair of eastern phoebes who nest every year under the eaves, on the ledge of the window above our bed. when i wake up in the morning, i can look up and see them rushing back and forth with tiny twigs for the nest. they've also been sitting on a branch nearby, wagging their tails and singing...what fun!

That sounds lovely Julia. Are they noisy I wonder? We had a wren under our bedroom window which started it's very loud song too early for me!

How lovely Freda. Uplifting, in more ways than one! What sweet little speckled eggs (and yay for the photo!) - I hope you'll get to see them hatch.
All these interesting sounding birds... and I have sparrows nesting above my bedroom window! (And lots and lots of bees in my walls - now when the room is quiet I can hear a gentle hum...)
I'm glad you're feeling more refreshed now, keep looking after yourself and enjoy the skylarks singing :-)

I was thrilled with the photo (but cannot get it where I want it or the size I want it!). I have started my day lately with a walk down the path to see if there are any chicks yet...beautiful.

Isn't it confusing to find what you call a skylark, we call a fieldlark?

We have no birds nesting on our balcony, never had, but I like to think it almost happened as a couple of weeks ago we had a visit from mr and mrs blackbird. Mr blackbird was showing the bushy plant I have in a corner to mrs blackbird and she tried it out by disappearing into it and coming out on the other side. But 'no', she said and off they went.

There are times when words come easy. I can fully understand if for you that may be not so just now. Be it because of lack of concentration or energy, being overwhelmed by sadness and grieving.
Probably and hopefully you will continue writing as I always find it very helpful. But not outwardly focussed, not for the world -which is us- to see just now. We - the world - can wait.
May your 'quiet' be healing. Take care. Hug.

We also have a woodlark but the differences are very slight. Appreciating your wise words and hugs Cath..

How exciting to have discovered skylarks nesting close to you. I love the sound of the skylark. We have blackbirds nesting close by, the parents are often seen getting worms from the garden, They didn't enjoy our extensive gardening work last weekend! Sending you hugs, I'm glad that the break with friends helped you. Sarah x

Such beautiful photography - so good to have the images back on your blog....those eggs are an amazing colour. And...the Lark Ascending is one of my favourite pieces - lovely to have this version posted.
