 ..of style.

For a while.

I leave you with a collection of quotes from my style notebook which I have collected over four years and which have made me think, or made me laugh or inspired me - sorry I can't always credit them.

Wear confidence. It is the height of fashion.

Elegance can be quiet but it must be confident.

Elegance is the privilege of age.

Stick with a style and add a piece or two a year.

We want the utopian place where comfort meets good looks.

Buy less and buy the best.

Remember they can stay lovely on the shelves.

Fashion...is life enhancing and, like everything that gives pleasure, it is worth doing well. Vivienne Westwood

To me clothing is a form of self-expression- there are hints about who you are in what you wear.  Marc Jacobs

Fashion changes but style is eternal. Yves Saint Laurent

Clothes make the man. Very few naked men have much influence in the world. Mark Twain

Style is wearing an evening dress to McDonald's, wearing heels to play football. It is personality, confidence and seduction. John Galliano

Regarding your own style - Once found it brings complete happiness, It gives you self confidence, always. Yves Saint Laurent

Naturalness is synonymous with stye. Armani

Fashion is all about happiness. It's fun. It's important. But it's not medicine. Donatella Versace

There now follows a short interlude..

Thank you, Freda. This has been fascinating, and I will try to absorb at least some of these quotes - they are brilliant.

My very stylish paternal grandmother used to say “to be in fashion, you have to be out of fashion” which I always interpreted as ‘work out your own style’.
Like others, I have really enjoyed this interlude; thank you for launching it.

These area all excellent, Freda. Thank you for giving me a lot to think about! I'm going to offer one tip of my own..i decided early on, based on my observations of "little old ladies", that when the day came i could not get my eyeliner on straight, that i would quit wearing it!...nothing like squiggly eyeliner as a dead giveaway. (That day has come and gone.)..now, on to fabulous sunglasses and flamboyant jewelry!

Part of growing old gracefully perhaps?

I love your blog, Freda.
I find it sustaining and inspiring.
Also, I appreciate your honesty in mentioning times when your not feeling so great. It gives me permission to experience all feelings.

Re fashion: it's great to have your posts validating fashion - as an art form, a representation of personality, a mask or shield, and for its psychotherapeutic benefits.

Reading through, I don't think anyone has mentioned commissioning a garment from tailor or dressmaker: maybe one beautifully made garment in lovely & interesting fabric(s) per year?

Love,
Susan

Hello Susan and thank you for commenting. I love your middle paragraph - you made me realise that I do try to 'validate' fashion - it is often decried as only about vanity, and female vanity at that! Next time I am in the city I will look at pattern books which I've not looked at for years - it would be lovely to get something made...
