..like cooking.

It helps iif I clear all the surfaces in my very snall kitchen and make it somwwhere I want to be in. I make sure it's warm enough, I have enough light, I have all the ingredients (30 mile round trip on a bus to the shiops if not!). A fresh tea towel, a bowl of hot soapy water so I can wash up as I go.

It helps if I don the beautiful linen apron a friend gave me for my birthday. It's funny just how much difference this makes. I feel like a real cook with this on.

I might put on some music, or a podcast and the scene is set.

I cut the aubergines in half and score them and add oil and salt before cooking them for a bout 40 minutes. Oven at 189C.
Meanwhile I fry some miced beef or lamb, onion and garlic and add a tin of chopped tomatoes, some tomato puree  and when the aubergine is soft I scrape out the fleesh and add it to the mix, then layer the sauce into the aubergine shells with some mozarella and basil leaves and pop back into the oven till the cheese on top is melted and golden.

I set a nice table and pour a glass of wine, and realise I have quite enjoyed myself.

I'm delighted that you enjoyed every stage of the process.

Your preparation reminded me of this.
Despite being dated, I still find it useful.

Advice from a Singer Sewing Manual 1949:

"Prepare yourself mentally for sewing. Think about what you are going to do… Never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisically. Good results are difficult when indifference predominates. Never try to sew with a sink full of dishes or beds unmade. When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing…When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Put on a clean dress. Keep a little bag of French chalk near your sewing machine to dust your fingers at intervals. Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick on… If you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or husband will come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should."

Thanks for the recipe . It will be added to my menu plan. I have never analysed my cooking process but usually aim to work with surfaces cleared and clean . I don't think that I would ever get around to sewing or knitting if I followed the advice in Susan's sewing book ! Glad you're enjoying your cooking.

It’s all in the mind, as they say! I just needed to give it a little more thought.

I admire your dedication to the process but I've had to learn to cook in any conditions including at present while dodging an 8 year old watching Ukrainian videos on the counter! My aubergine recipe is similar except that I save a few minutes by microwaving the aubergines until soft rather than baking them. Also, I've found the best tool for scooping out is an ice cream scoop with a serrated edge 😋
