Simply..locally distinctive....

In looking for photoclues as to where I am for my writing retreat, I am seeking out features which are locally distinctive - not unique to the area, but characteristic of it. Like duck ponds! (I can't think where there is even one at home.)

The charity Common Ground has made local distinctiveness a tenet of their work - I love what they do - and if you are interested in the natural environment and the arts I think you will enjoy their website. There is a 30 minute Radio 4 programme about their work here.

What is locally distinctive about where you live?

Oh, I can't guess yet, but it's a very inspiring place for sure! It would be fun if you were in Portugal :) I live in the mountains but we do have lowlands in the south, and ducks... anyway if you come to where I live someday, you may find wolves (Iberian wolf) and blue butterflies (Phengaris alcon). Just come quick, because there is a risk of extinguish over both of them, unfortunately.

I've been to Lisbon only. I so hope the woves and blue butterflies can be protected..

You must be in Aylesbury re: the ducks!

Elaine's suggestion is inspired, but I'm no nearer guessing.
I do like the geese though. :)

Not guessing today.. just admiring the quiet of the place.
Distinctive of where I live? Some days ago the Canadian goose has arrived. Each morning around eleven he's standing watch in the grass near the ditch. Like he did last year. And the year before that. In a few weeks one morning the family will be out. He will still stand watch while mama and the small ones feed on the grass. He's my spring harbinger.

Locally distinctive to my Michigan home? Besides our current frozen winter ice, I would say a mostly solitary Bald Eagle, which can be spotted soaring majestically against the blue sky or sometimes just sitting high up on a branch of a fir tree, looking around with (what I imagine to be) quite a piercing stare!

I'm glad to know you have the treat of your writing time, wherever it is!

Magnificent bird. We have eagles in Scotland, but rarely seen in our parts.

I don't have a clue where you are. Some of the hints have ruled out my thought of Shetland Island or Iona. But I do know where you are not...Boston, Massachusetts. That area is under at least 7 feet of snow right now with more on the way...not a blade of grass or goose to be seen.

Does the place come to a complete standstill? Hard for us to imagine Cathy.
