Simply..looking for signs....

Trying to make the diffcult decision about Venice I found myself looking for signs.  On the seat of the otherwise empty bus was a bottle of antibacterial hand gel which is in short supply in local shops! Was it a sign?

In the Burgh Hall was an exhibition by a Signwriter called Frank Carty and this one struck a chord.. Could it be a message?

I'm not really making light of it - people are dying and many thousands of lives are being affected - but 81% of people who test positive for the coronavirus do not need any treatment at all.....the death rate appears to be 1-2% and 0.1% of Italian towns are affected.

March is my writing month, and I can do this work anywhere. We have put off the decision until the last minute and are listening of course, to the advice from The Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

I read with interest this blog post and the two most recent posts on Venezia blog and the interview with Sars expert Dr Sarah Borwein, which encourages caution while warning against panic, and I've marvelled at live web cams of quiet Venice in the sunshine today.

Is anyone else having to reconisider their travel plans?

I am looking back at this post as I ponder the option of whether or not to go.

NB   I may not be blogging for a few days!

Your post today would be a perfect example of what i meant about feeling burdened by hard decisions when one is on their own...i can only imagine how hard this is to decide, Freda. What an unexpected and strange set of circumstances to pop up out of nowhere! My method is rather haphazard. I might say” heads i go, and tails i stay home. And then flip a coin...if i am happy (or relieved) with the outcome, i know that deep down, this is what i felt was best. If i am not happy with the outcome, i know i really wanted to do the opposite..so i do!....no help at all, really, am i?

I used to write all the options down on little scraps of paper, screw them up and toss them in the air. Then I would pick one and if the answer written there didn’t satisfy me I would discard it and open another one. The lengths we have to go to, to find out what we really really want!

I do laugh at 'the lengths we have to go to'!

A friend described how she agonised 'then came over all sensible and sanguine' and came to a decision. I tried it too.

I have never heard that way of saying things before, Freda...but i love it so much, i can hardly stand it! I’m taking that one for myself too..:-)

I sense your subconscious may have already made up its mind Freda!

Such a difficult decision to make because there is no right answer. There is the chance you could become infected but you could travel at another time and catch a dose of "ordinary" flu and be very unwell. Think Julia's decision maker has a lot of merit in working out how you really feel about it. Follow your heart.

Can I stress that this is totally my own opinion, so please take it or leave it as you wish. The chances of you catching this flu, and the risks to you if you do are, as you say, quite slight, so I wouldn't be particularly worried about that.

What would concern me are the possible travel restrictions. Italy appears to have come down on the side of caution already regarding folks crossing borders, and I can't see this improving for a while. Other countries are now becoming more concerned also, and quarantine could be a real possibility.

I've not seen any guidance yet regarding reimbursement of flight costs for those who decide not to go ahead with plans, and I suspect many will be out of pocket just because they do not want to risk going. A friend of my husband is due to go to Italy with his son, who is playing in a sporting fixture - this would prove very expensive to them if the fixture is cancelled, as the flights and hotel are paid for and quite separate.

This whole episode is going to be quite ruinous for the tourist industry worldwide, but Venice will still be there!

Venice is still here - and so am I!

I wasn't sure whether to comment or not...I agree with the coin tossing suggestion. I use that myself, surprisingly effective! Or sometimes you have to wait until it comes down to the wire, you either go or you don't! Literally! Notice what your body is doing. Is it moving about packing and excitedly preparing things for your trip or is it holding back? The other thing I would think about is whether you will be able to relax and enjoy yourself while you are there or will you be hesitant about being out in public, in crowds, eating out etc? Also I too would be thinking about how this might develop and possible difficulties getting back and having to isolate myself etc. I think it might be easier if it wasn't such a specific area of concern......just my thoughts......

That’s such good advice Lynn, to notice what one’s body is doing...

Relaxed already - following the lead of the locals...thanks Linda and all for sharing these ideas on decision making,

I would say, follow your intuition Freda. I often find that, when faced with a dilemma I end up feeling more confused when I try to take everyone else's opinion on board. What feels right for you? Hopefully, you will come to the same conclusion as your lovely travelling companion.
