On the theme of beautiful things we can buy for very little money, it is astonishing to remember that in the 1630's a single bulb of a tulip such as this might cost 100 times a skilled man's annual wage! I can buy a bunch of them for a mere £3. I am so spoiled!

But your appreciation of them will be entirely different to that of a "speculator" who saw only a monetary potential in the bulb rather than the spiritual uplift of something so lovely.

The flowers, vase and bowl make a stunning combination. This post reminded of a book I really enjoyed : Tulip Fever, by Deborah Moggach.

There's also 'The Tulip' by Anna Pavord: a historical account of tulip mania, which is a good companion read to the novel.

I had no idea it had been made into a film Cathy. I love Judi Dench and must check it out.

I'm also a Judi Dench fan. I think that's how I found this movie, looking at a list of her films. If memory serves me right (and it doesn't always these days 😊) the movie follows the book fairly closely.

I have never seen the tulip fields except on films and didn’t know of the film. Will look out for that. Thank you Cathy.

It's amazing how much beauty there is in something we take for granted. Your blog really helps me to stop and look at things around me
