Simply....mind the sparks!

Whew! That was a big task.

I'm thrilled that I won't ever have to do it again.  At least not on this scale..

'The last bit is the hardest.' I was telling myself as I got to the pile of books I didn't know what to do with. Back to Kondo. 'Does it move you?' she asks, and I know straight away that the answer is 'Not in the least!'

Out it went.

No regrets.

Just so many sparks of joy coming from my book shelves they might set the house on fire!

So how will I celebrate?

By having a day off tomorrow.

Lovely.

I might read.

Last photo, promise!

Are you making progress? You don't have to go at decluttering full-tilt of course (I've always been a rather all-or-nothing type and Marie Kondo's method is right up my street!). If you'd like to declutter a little bit just do your sock drawer...or the bathroom cabinet...

I've moved on to papers and am making literal sparks by burning years' worth of old financial papers in the garden incinerator - it kept me warm for a wee while.

Your bookcase looks wonderfully organised now - yes, a mammoth task but I'm sure it now gives you pleasure. Enjoy your reading.

It gives me a ridiculous amount of pleasure - like you, I'm quite chirpy!

Wow! I can almost feel the sparks from here! Yes, the thought that we won't have to do this again on the same scale is uplifting.
I am amazed at the view from your back gate, I cannot imagine having that much beauty on my doorstep.

We are so lucky to live with this view - I am looking at it as I write - still some snow on the hills, but sunny and clear and sharp.

Well that all looks fabulous. I can't wait to get the study finished so I can move back in. And they'll be some serious decluttering along the way.

Doing the bookshelves was easy compared with the work going on in your study just now Jessica - I hope you get to this part very soon!

Just curious, did you make a choice of books 'to be read' first, while
tidying? If so what was on top? As for me I can never have enough of looking at bookcases, the very inviting yours or the equally tempting mine.

Am I making progress? Not really. I find there is the macro tidying, which is as it says a major undertaking, and there is the micro. I have become very good at small. Just now I am making all the fountainpens I want to keep working again. Which is a labour of patience. The macro process takes me from chaos to joy, the micro from mindful to serene. Both are good.

Well I still don't have a to be read pile! I read everything as soon as it comes in the door. Most of my books are reference books of one kind or another. (Art, gardening and landscape, PPE, travel..) I do have a 'to be re-read' pile and I now have three which are on my book group list - to be read. But you may notice I have some spaces....which is nice. I'm sure we all agree that small is good Cath, and you are very patient I can tell.

Enjoy your weekend off. Hopefully in the future, your decluttering won't be quite so traumatic because you won't have collected as much. I'm more mindful about what I bring in, but even so, I still need to declutter every now & then. It might not be something I've brought in, but something already there that I've decided I ne longer want/need. I've come to the conclusion it's always a work in progress. Do you think we can really, truly ever be done?

Only when we are dead! No, 'Done' I think is that point where you only have, in Kondo's words, 'as much as you can properly handle'. I really like that phrase - I feel that's achievable. It sounds like you are about there Cathy! I know I will never again squirrel so much away in cupboards and corners...

I've been meaning to say congratulations on this massive achievement for a while now! What a relief! And what a zing of joy that bookshelf is. I'm zinging looking at it! And also at the view ... wow ... breathtaking! We are lucky sods, aren't we?! Congratulations Freda. What's next on your list? Or are you done now and ready to knuckle down on your writing, with a clear mind, full of joy?
