Simply..my city....

When a friend said she wanted me to show her 'my Glasgow' I thought first, of course, of the Glasgow School of Art but it is covered in scaffolding after the disastrous fire in 2014. The nearby Willow Tea Rooms also by Mackintosh have a beautiful facade,  but it too is currently covered in scaffolding for a two year refurbishment. The Burrell Collection? Closed for four years. The great little cafe in the art deco Glasgow Film Theatre surely. No, the cafe no longer exists, replaced by a bar on the first floor minus the decor which was a big part of the attraction. The National Trust for Scotland own a typically Glaswegian tenement house. Closed for the winter!

However....

Picture
The Duke of Wellington is still there though with a new view (but the same hat!) since this shot in 2013.
Picture
The authorities eventually gave up on removing the traffic cone hat put there and loved by irreverent Glaswegians. The image now appears on postcards and T-shirts...

more tomorrow..

Thank you for making me look again with your great photographs as I have Canadian visitors arriving in May and all my usual places are not looking their best. Your post has sparked the idea of an architectural walking tour.

Ah, I have the very thing in the next post Sheena! (If you have time to share your 'usual places' that would be great.)

I do like a bit of irreverence! I think Billy Connolly would approve too... Thank you for the virtual tour - funny how so many places are closed at the same time. It always amazes me how long restoration/refurbishment takes - I keep trying to visit Tate St Ives when I'm in Cornwall but that has been closed for ages too. Look forward to seeing more of your Glasgow...

I think maybe Billy Connolly put it there! How long and how expensive these refurbs are is always amazing. I love Tate St Ives - keep trying.

I note that the Duke's trusty steed is currently hatless!

True. And he's lost his hi-vis jacket too!

They have had scaffolding up around the Capitol (congress) building in DC for a long time and the Washington Monument is closed indefinitely for work, so Glasgow isn't the only place with refurbishment in progress.

Now if they would just build a large wall around 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue...with no way to get out...
