Simply..pots, pots, pots....

After watching this film this morning (before washing my hair or making the bed - such is lockdown) I realised I have a nice collection of bowls, which probably started with  these Bernard Leach soup bowls.  I bought  a set of six of them when I was 19 and working as a waitress for the summer in a hotel in St Ives.. They have been well used!

I had done some pottery at Glasgow School of Art but I wasn't any good at it. It did however give me an appreciation of ceramics which I have always enjoyed.

I didn't set out to make a collection, and none of them are expensive (although the Leach ones might be expensive now! The last time I saw any of them was in a glass cabinet in the Victoria and Albert Museum.) Two of the best ones came from IKEA. The quite large and very elegant one above  has a crackle glaze, a subtle oriental looking colour and was made in Portugal for IKEA. I love it.

Do you have a 'collection' of anything in your home that you particularly enjoy?

Apart from a collection of lovely notebooks - I know many of your followers collect them - I have built up a collection of writing implements, just ordinary things, but ones that mean something to me. Top of the list is the Visconti ballpoint my husband bought me for a birthday present, then the Tombow fountain pen that went from me to him. I also have a box of Blackwing pencils that I use very sparingly and a box of pretty pencils covered with Japanese decorated papers. There are also 3 ballpoints with wooden casings which a friend's husband carved for me from wisteria wood cut from the wisteria outside the kitchen window. These are standing in a pot along with tapers and candles I collected from churches near and far. Other pens in their boxes lie amongst the photo frames and greetings cards, most of them given at some time to my husband and now saved by me. All these things are along the top of a bookcase in my untidy study and all of them give me pleasure.

I find it moving, how much your pens and pencils evoke, Rosemary.
And, I like it that some are high status and some, modest, yet all have meaning.

I pick up small bud vases and pots in charity shops (when I say 'pick up', I do pay for them) and most are British studio pottery from the 60s (I have some lovely ones from Scotland).
I can imagine the hands of the potters from their shape, and the location where they come from. I have them arranged along my window sills, and move them around now and then.
(And I have a big wide coffee cup, made for me by the potter at Findhorn Foundation, when I visited many years' ago.)
