Simply....retreat?

Have you ever been on a retreat?

I was talking with a friend recently who told me that she and her husband used to plan two day 'retreats' every now and then, in their own home.

They would stock up with lots of nice food which didn't need cooking, give themselves permission not to do any chores, turn off the phone and spend a couple of quiet days catching up with reading.

I may try this. It might be a lovely between-seasons thing to do. I'm already mentally lining up a good book or two, could switch off the phone, the radio, (don't have a TV), the computer, skip the newspapers, and take time for more conversation, meditation, some walking or yoga perhaps, and there is a box of classical music CD's we've been given which need listening to....

What kind of retreat would you like?

Or can you imagine nothing worse?

There is a Guide to Good Retreats if the idea of a retreat with strangers appeals.

I've been on a yoga retreat with a girlfriend. My stomach was growling so loudly by the time we got to the end of each morning's class before breakfast! I'm a girl who needs to eat soon after rising or my energy drops too much. My friend and I also smuggled in fudge and got filthy looks from others, hee hee. I wouldn't do that style retreat again as there were lots of rules, but I do like the concept of retreat. I guess some of my rest days are like that. Loved your recent posts. I too have been drafting words for my seasonal wardrobe thoughts and needs. We're on the same wavelength. Your studio looks adorable. (One day we will meet. One day.) x

Both the 'home' and the 'somewhere else' variety of retreat we have tried. During a 'home retreat' I prefer to work with a theme. The preparation beforehand I like very much too. This kind of retreat is very nourishing, I think.
The retreats elsewhere were usually in an abbey, with no programme scheduled, where silence was observed also during meals and with the possiblility to go for walks. We have been to abbeys in Belgium and in my own country. This kind of retreat is more to find stillness.

Nourishment and stillness both sound attractive to me, and worth 'retreating' for.

No - I have never considered a retreat - but I consider our holidays at the coast - a different lifestyle for a few days - very calming and and beneficial.

I've been on three 3-day silent retreats on Cumbrae, at The College, each one led by a Spiritual Director, with addresses on a theme (eg Transfiguration) to punctuate the silence. By the time we were allowed to speak again, I didn't want to. Interesting, for someone who likes to talk!

I think I could be silent for a bit, though three days is a long time - it's the company of strangers I might not like!
