A sad day, indeed. And no one living outside of the UK and other EU countries should think election this won't impact them in a myriad a ways--none good. Just as the US election has the potential for taking us all off a cliff.

'To hell in handcart' is the expression that comes to mind!

As a Scot who has been living in France for over 30 years, I am broken-hearted by the results of the referendum ... We need to bring down barriers instead of building them. We should all be citizens of the world. Mary, I hope the American voters will have enough lucidity not to go down that route.

I ,too, feel broken-hearted. I dislike the fact that I feel so strongly about people who voted to leave, as I thought I was a believer in democracy, and that people are entitled to their own views... We feel immediately affected as my daughter is doing a languages and European studies degree. She is about to go abroad to France and Italy for the year, funded by the E U Erasmus organisation. I realise that nothing will change overnight, but what will happen to her university department and EUlecturers on her return? And more to the point it's going to cost us a lot more to go out to visit her!! But hey, I have to remind myself that we're not refugees waiting in a transit camp trying to find a country that actually may give us some sort of a welcome!

As an ex-Erasmus student I do feel for your daughter's plight and hope that many of these initiatives will continue as there will still be the will for cultural exchange and shared experience. A wider perspective is useful as you suggest Penny.

I share your sadness... it will be up to ourselves, global citizens, not to let these barriers distance us.

Yes Cristina - how we act as individuals still counts thankfully! Thank you for that thought.
