Simply..self care....

At times of stress or shock self care can be as simple as reading a book to take your mind off things for a spell. I find the domestic things can be a great comfort. Thus Italian spinach and ricotta rolls....

I've had this book for years and only used it once.  I don't bake often but decided that when I did it had to be something special, something worth the effort and I love the idea of Italian cafe culture - the whole image of small amounts of really good quality food, time out, a glass of wine or decent coffee (bacari in Venice) - savouring it, which is why this book survived various culls.

So, cleaned my small kitchen, made it pretty, made space to work, prepared the ingredients.

450 grams of spinach?  This is 200 grams which was what I had and which turned out to be way to much! You have to keep your wits about you with a new recipe book..

(Bought pastry because my last attempt at pastry making was a disaster.)

Some for now - it was warm enough to eat outside - and some to freeze.

Gosh Freda they look so tempting and mouth watering - I wish we were coming for lunch again - I can vouch for what a great cook you are.

You're very kind Viv (and I look forward to you coming again!).

How civilised. I always use chillled puff pastry.
I had to use my common sense over a recipe that called for slow roasting something at Gas 1/4 for 40 mins. They were barely warmed through - let alone 'caramelised at the edges'!
My oven doesn't even calibrate less than Gas mark 1. I had to bump it up to 5 before I saw any cooking happening.

You have set me to wondering if the fact that my cooker has a hole in the bottom has anything to do with my erratic results! Hmm.

Now those are the kind of details I needed, thank you! Yum! I have to enjoy these things vicariously these days. I did make some gluten free coriander flatbread last night though which was tasty.
Domestic things can be so comforting... I find folding clean laundry very therapeutic.

The coriander flatbread sounds good and I own up to quite liking ironing.

They look delicious. Good thing you only had the 200gms of spinach.

A good way to look at it Mary! I had enough left to make a tasty fritatta.

Freda, your pastries look so elegant and delicious! I could have probably eaten the whole batch. good self-care includes moderation...:-)
I find great satisfaction and serenity in domestic chores too. Like finally addressing a stack of ironing, or mending. When it is done, i feel so good about myself.

Thinking about it, I think I do admire you for making such a delicious looking meal, yet I do admire you even more for cleaning the kitchen before you started making it.
