Seriously good questions in this (longish) article.

And you know I like a good question...

Seriously scary questions and observations. Ones that worry me.

oh how I can relate. even though I'm not on any social media, I find myself constantly checking to see if there's a new post on the blogs I follow or if someone's sent an email. I tell myself to stop...then go right back to checking. interesting article.

I think we can probably all relate to that! I'm glad you found it interesting. I thought it the most important thing I've read in a long time.

Thanks for that link Freda - interesting and horrifying. I was thinking about all this only last week - it's something I feel very strongly about. Do you know some customers actually get quite cross with me for not being on any social media... The dopamine loop has a lot to answer for! I think the world might split into two for a while with all this - I know which world I'd rather inhabit.

My hope is that we can come together with a more nuanced view of the pro's and con's. (I wonder if your customers wanted an easy way to share their enthusiasm for your work? One of the good things about social media possibly?)

I have 'shared' this with three people and am aware of the irony entailed in so doing!
There was a lot there I wasn't aware of. I joined but never use, Twitter and Instagram and have suspended my little used Facebook account. (This dismayed one person but I said I could get her news face to face quite easily!). I find I can waste quite enough time meandering through blogs but for the most part limit myself to regularly reading only a very few. Yours being one of them. They are interesting, informative and like minded or sometimes, a window on an entirely different world and lifestyle. Like picking up an absorbing novel that you can read in installments. And of course endless checking of small nuggets of fascinating information. I don't know what we did without Google. The library? Out of date encyclopaedias? Yellow Pages? Newspapers? Or did we just not exhibit the same levels of curiosity?

Love your comments Lucille - it''s a huge subject. I used to love libraries and encyclopaedias and could spend an age looking at a - dictionary - one word led to another just like the internet but private!
If you are curious at all it is amazing, but there are consequences and unintended uses which we must be aware of I think.

What a powerful article, Freda. I totally agree with your concerns and thos of your community of readers..So much to comtemplate here..and time to kondo what i do online. Your blog and Lotta's stay on my radar, but not much else!
The part i find very disturbing is how there is concern that device use can actually change the human brain. Thank you for this one..it is a keeper!

Powerful is the word Julia and it is who has the power and how they use it that's the scary bit.

A lot of food for thought here. I have not yet read the whole article but will certainly do so. Our 11 year old grandaughter has just received a (new to her) iPhone for her birthday and is happily exploring Snapchat.
I have to admit to using social media; Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest. I have friends across the country and family abroad, it helps to feel in touch with them. However, I am very aware of the manipulation that goes on behind all of these.
As I type, my husband and son in law are watching old episodes of Red Dwarf on auto play......
