Simply..somewhere between the rainbow and the internet...

Somewhere between the rainbow and the Internet a place that is important to you is struggling to maintain its integrity.

Isn't that a great opening sentence?  Read more of this essay by Common Ground's Sue Clifford here.

A beautiful clue...

I loved hearing about what is locally distinctive where you are!

Iberian wolves and blue butterflies in Portugal, bald eagles in Michigan and Canada geese in the Netherlands, ice and 7 foot deep snow in Boston Massachusetts. Thank you for sharing.

Are there distinctive architectural features where you live?

LOL well, my little wash house, for a start - the half-timbered architecture is very typical of our region, with a tiny roof detail that many don't notice. Fruit trees are also traditional; we're known as the "apple canton" and there are many, many orchards overlooking Lake Constance, but also a lot of strawberry fields :) We also have a lot of storks locally, and this winter, they don't seem to have gone south, unusually…

Well, that kind of brick and timber architecture was relatively common in southeast England and the Midlands around the 16th & 17th century since stone wasn't as easy to come by as in some other areas.

How about Hampshire? Ducks, pheasants and this kind of architecture all occur there.

As for unique architectural features in Toronto. Well, buildings from when the city was founded are all brick and look quite like the style you see in places like Boston. Then there was a wave of Victorian architecture before things moved onto a mix of styles. It's pretty eclectic and not always aesthetically appealing.

Not Hampshire! Toronto sounds like most cities in its eclectic mix - thanks for telling us about it Alison.

hi freda...i am enjoying this detective story....hope you are enjoying your secret retreat!
i live in wheeling, wv, usa...such a newly developed part of the world compared to where you live. the best-known architectural structure here is the wheeling suspension bridge, built in 1849. it spans the ohio river and for the first two years of its existence was the longest suspension bridge in the world....

I am having a wonderful time here, and am learning so much about other places too.

Omigoodness, Julia...I've been across that bridge several times. In Pittsburgh, we have The Phillips Screwdriver Building. I'm not sure anyone knows the real name of the building, they just call it this because the top does look just like a Phillips screwdriver.

that is so funny, cathy...i have been here over 30 years and have never even heard of that building...you must tell us more..and come for tea next time you have the urge to drive over the suspension bridge.
we can compare notes on our kondoing...

Mackinac Island is just a skip across the water from me. It is a historical landmark and huge tourist destination. If interested, Google it! Better yet, visit! Architectural styles found on the Island span three centuries and include a feast for those who love architectural walking tours - Native American, French Rustic, Military, Colonial, Victorian, Carpenter Gothic, Greek Revival, Colonial Revival, Classical Revival, Shingle Style, Arts & Craft and American Foursquare. I'd say the nearby Mackinac Bridge is also a distinctive architectural structure to most people who live in Michigan. As for me, here in St. Ignace, I live in a modest [small] 1950's hip-roofed ranch. On the way to becoming Marie Kondo-fied!
