Simply..spacious....

Since Kondoing my home last year I would say that the difference is that it is more spacious and peaceful, and, more importantly so is the inside of my head, so I was happy to buy the new book Spark Joy by Marie Kondo.

Picture
She prompted me to look for photographs of my ideal/dream lifestyle and I took a fresh look at my two favourite books on interior design, which motivated me to go that bit further. For me, this was worth the price of the book, which I will now gift to my sister...

I picked up a  few little tips about storage, admired that she touched upon the difficult topic of other people's stuff (learn to ignore basically) and that she acknowledged that some people are quite happily untidy, and I was interested in a few small insights into Shinto and Japan - about which I will probably read more elsewhere now.

I would say this is a gentler version of The Life Changing Magic of Tidying with more stories, anecdotes, detail etc. It's also a very attractive book to look at and hold. I would say it is the gift version - but I prefer the more rigorous, punchy, straight-to-the-point and, to me at least, funny first version which I still LOVE!

Thanks for the review, Freda. I have put my name on the list to take it out from the library when it becomes available, which should be in a couple of months or so. There are a lot of copies at the library (about 100 or so), however, several hundred people have put holds on it. It's amazing how many people have been inspired by it.

It is amazing (and that must be a very big library!)

It's quite amazing and one of the best, but most undervalued aspects of Toronto. The City of Toronto library was founded in 1810 and has a massive network of small libraries and a large reference library as well -- according to the media facts at the link below its one of the world's busiest libraries. There are 99 branches and I have four branches within walking distance or a very quick transit ride away.

Apparently 1.2 million Torontonians have library cards. And it's free (well, funded by the taxpayer!).

Interesting! I think I'll probably read it. Still haven't managed to Kondo my life. Bits of her writing stay with me. However, one thing it has made me acknowledge to myself is that I am a rebel at heart. I folded all my socks and underwear once in Ms Kondo's way, now I get pleasure from shoving them all in the drawer unfolded. I positively love stretching one sock over the other !!oh dear!,

I still stretch one sock over the other too Penny! And I don't fold underwear properly either, but I have kept everything else folded the Kondo way because I find it easier to see what I've got.

That's the real advantage of the whole thing!

Yay for rebels! (Have you read Gretchen Rubin on Tendencies?)

Thankyou - that is a far more useful review and I will probably invest in the ebook, as I did with the first one.

Very funny to see your two favourite home books as they are two of my favourites, too, and have survived a good deal of book-thinning over the years!! Small world, eh?! ;) Wouldn't it be fun to be let loose on each other's bookcases?!

Oh it would! I wonder how many more books we own in common..

'Spacious and peaceful' - that's what I'm doing it for too, in home and head! Glad I didn't buy the new book because I love the original one, but I do like the look of the other two books in your picture...

Having read your impression I don't think I will add Spark Joy to my books. Not sure about the other two, I confess, they softly whisper 'buy me'. Check my library first come to think of it.
What is it about socks? I too have a rebellious socks, stretching one sock over the other still..

I think I will browse the interior design section next time I am in a bookshop....(Unlike CC we have a tiny library!)

A fellow blogger mentioned this book last weekend and I also read the reviews that mentioned it included much from the previous book. I love my sensual home book too, the cover just invites you to open it up. Sarah x

The cover is suede, which is a nice sensual touch, isn't it? I found mine in Ikea!

I've read Kondo's first book and have tried, more or less successfully, to introduce some of her ideas into my life. I've discarded clothes that no longer (or quite frankly never did) spark joy. I've been folding my clothes 'correctly', but like others above, still bundle up my socks. I can see the logic of tackling all my books etc in one go but prefer to do it bit by bit, which is not as immediately satisfying, but works for me, which is what matters.
I am coming to the conclusion that, despite my efforts to reform, I am one of those happily untidy people, and should probably learn to embrace it.

It's her use of terms like 'correct' that I find funny! Is it just me?
