My friend in the next village has a steep bank at the back of her house which is looking spectacular right now with rhododendrons, acers, rowans and a huge copper beech nearly 100 feet up.

There are 99 steep steps to the top and the head of a waterfall.

From the front garden she can watch, and hear. porpoise and dolphin.

Stunning.

What a beautiful place. I do love a copper beech - we had one in the home I was born in, and I have fond memories of that garden.

The way the copper beech colours in autumn is amazing. Every colour in each leaf.

What an incredible garden, Freda..and what an act of love and of faith to work it, year after year...i like the idea of 99 steps..i wonder if the person who constructed them, thought about where there should be 99 vs 100. And how did they decide? Was it math? Or deliberate?

We may never know but it was quite a feat!

How very lovely and the house nestles into the hillside, framed by the planting. I used to be a devoted garden visitor but don't seem to have the time now. So I am delighted to visit your own and other gardens electronically.

The builiding you see is an outbuilding - the actual house was behind me as I took this shot. It's lovely to be able to share a visit this way!

Beautiful garden - we too have a copper beech just yards from the cottage it has a lovely canopy. I would love to have 99 steps in the garden and a waterfall.

So lovely. I like to imagine the garden under your less harsh summer vs our already blistering temps in the 30s. I do see that it is a bit chilly there today.

Chilly and wet - but our climate does make for great gardens Mary.!

How many years did it take to see this garden develop to what it looks like now, I wonder. Such patience and creativity to dream a garden like this alive. It is beautiful. How often does she walk these steps? Once a day? More? Less?

I will ask Liz more about the history of the garden and how often she climbs those steps. I have only been up them once and we did talk about bathing under the waterfall - maybe this summer!
