Simply..stop skiddling....

I have made a resolution to stop skiddling about!

Skiddling (one of those expressive Scottish words with no exact equivalent in English) really means messing about in water in a time wasting, pointless kind of way, but in our family it meant doing something in an indecisive way - footering, faffing, getting nowhere, cluttered, scattered, fussy, messy - not knowing quite what you are aiming for but carrying on anyway....am I making myself clear here? Perhaps this example will help.

We're having to think about getting the garden looking great for the charity opening in June. I browsed through my posts about the garden (under Simply Grow) and was struck by this one. No skiddling about here, but the clarity, boldness and simplicity I like.  Just the motivation I needed.

Tomorrow, the greenhouse.

Now I use the word 'skiddle' in a totally different way. Like when a small creature skiddles across the road in front of the car or a centipede skiddles across the terrace. But to use it your way I have had a skiddley kind of week not being able to settle to anything, feeling that I wanted to settle to something but unable to identify what that something is. Does that make sense. Maybe it's because my head is still 'fuggy' from my horrible cold.

Now I'd maybe say 'skittered' in those circumstances! I do hope your horrid cold clears up soon, and you find what it is you want to do..

Can skiddling be part of a creative process too?

Good point Cath, but I don't link it with the kind of down time that leads to new ideas..

Skiddling is such a wonderful word! It reminds me so much of my childhood. It was always used in relation to mucking about in water. As in "stop yer skiddling!".

I think skidding has to do with playing about in water, ie little brother was busy skiddling in the sink. We were skiddling in the pond, and almost late to school.
Our Mum was from Lanarkshire , and I thought everyone knew this word, til I left home. 😂
