Have you heard of G bombs?

It's a list of foods to boost your body's immune system. I keep it in my purse and make sure I buy something from every category when I am food shopping.

G greens
B beans
O onions
M mushrooms
B berries
S seeds

Do you have any other tips for avoiding the dreaded lurgie?

Mary mentioned hand washing, which I have to confess to forgetting quite often. As children we had to wash our hands before every meal. Wiping doorhandles and light switches with disinfectant now and then is probably a good idea too. While travelling on public transport can be a hazard with people coughing and sneezing, being out in the open air going for it maybe counteracts the risks! Though city air may be a risk in itself....

I can't stand mushrooms, but if dried fruit counts as berries, I do OK on the rest. I love my greens, salad and cooked, eat loads of onions and garlic and have beans in home-made chilli. Seeds are in the muesli!

I don't know whether I've mentioned this on here before, but approx 45 years ago my biology teacher was telling us to have as many colours on our plates as we could. It seems she had a point!

One of the reasons I always wear a long scarf (besides owning so many of them :) ) is because rather than using my bare hands, I use them to open doors, touch elevator buttons, push carts or handle other items one encounters when out in public. Winter time, gloves add another layer of protection and not just from the cold.

I wash my hands a lot as I work with kids and travel on public transport to get to school (strikes permitting …). I reckon that mobile phones must also be pretty infested with germs … I try to take a course of probiotics in the autumn to fend off the "dreaded lurgy". I just had to look up the origin of that expression. According to wiktionary, it comes from the BBC radio comedy The Good Show of 9 November 1954. I've learned something new today!

Tee-hee. I think your idea about the probiotics is worth a try.

well, here in the usa most stores offer antibacterial wipes along with your shopping cart..i know we aren't supposed to be doing anti-bacterial...but i can't help wondering who last touched that shopping cart, and if they regularly wash their hands...i do that, and also a wipe of antibacterial gel after being in public places. being an ex-nurse, i am probably extra-cautious, but who wants to be sick for Christmas? and yes, i wash my hands dozens of times a day! don't call me picky! hahaha

I do wonder about vegetables and fruit NOT wrapped in plastic - how many people have handled them? And did they wash their hands? Yet another shopping dilemma!
I will wash my hands more often. Promise.

Lots of garlic... it doubles as an immune booster and a deterrent to anyone germ-laden or otherwise who might normally have sat next to you on the bus!
Glad you are feeling better :-)

Lots of foods have antisceptic qualities - we should all be eating them more perhaps.

Timely post Freda. I spent last night in Emergency dept where my son was being admitted with pneumonia following recent flu bug ,but much of the hospital was on lockdown with several different viruses causing ward closures and no visitors allowed. No beds either so he spent the night in a chair! Anyway it put all the hussle and hassle of Christmas in perspective. Being safe and well with our loved ones is the main thing.
Anything to avoid spreading germs and boosting our immune systems has to be good news!

Oh Mary I am so sad to hear that. What a horrible experience and what a worry it is that hospital infections are such a big problem. I hope your son makes a full recovery very soon. You are quite right - safe and well with our loved ones is the most important thing of all.
