..is a wonderful area in which to just wander and browse. It's a strangee mix of high end and downright tacky with everything n between.A few doors down from the hat shop is a huge vintage shop

More kilts!

We chatted to an American student who was putting together a great outfit for very little cost. It made me a little nostalgic for my student days!

A completely different experience In Mr Woods.

Wondrously beautiful things 110 million years old! We spent quite a while in there annd I boght a tiny piece of lapiz lazuli from Afghanistan for £4.50 and thought about how valuable it once was when used for blue pigment.

Many cake shops and great views of the castle.Many of the pubs have boards outside telling of the famous visitors and the lurid public hangings which took plce here.

Your trip to the Grassmarket is my idea of heaven, Freda!
So many wonderful things to peruse, sparking the imagination.
I wonder why it was called a grass market - selling flax for linen, or straw for bedding? Do you know?
(I can imagine a group of students, at night, placing the diver on top of the spire of one of the university colleges, to be discovered in the morning, like a weathervane.)

Oh, you are making me very nostalgic, Freda. One of my friends rented a flat in the Grassmarket which was the height of cool, even then, though very few tourists ever found their way to it then. It was considered a it rough as there was a homeless mission there but the edge just made it more appealing when young.
You are correct, Susan, animal fodder and hay was sold there and there is also a Lawnmarket which is where linen was sold.

I'm having fun going on this virtual shopping trip with you Freda. So many tempting goodies ! My favourite has to be the yellow hat ; that certainly sparked joy ! I'd have been seriously tempted even though I don't live a Downton abbey lifestyle.
