Simply..the spaces in between....

A warm welcome if you have just come over to my blog from Miss Minimalist!

You know it is said the silences are as important as the sounds in music, and the negative spaces as vital as the positive ones in a painting? I think the spaces in between the activities of day to day life are just as important, and I realise that many of my blogposts are about these moments in between.

In between chores, work, apppointments and the general busyness of life, I have learned to savour the little gaps and pauses. Sometimes I am consciously looking for subjects for the blog, for photos to delight my (and hopefully your) eye, for little spots of calm in a somtimes hectic schedule, and because I now write about them I notice them more, or more importantly for a simpler life, I take the time to create them.

Some are only seconds long, but I treasure them :- I stick my nose out of the back door first thing and smell the weather, look out of the glass front door every single time I pass it, take my coffee outside whenever I can, sit on the porch to look at the garden in the late afternoon light, pick a posy for the bedside tables, hide for a wee while in the greenhouse with a book....

What treasured moments in between do you have in your day (and can you build in more?)

look really closely at something beautiful....

Lovely post. Walking our dog is my time to really look at my surroundings, and appreciate her joy in life. I don't write about them though - maybe I should!

Seeing life through Hetty's eyes must be fun!

I enjoyed reading your piece on Miss Minimalist. I agree with your philosophy of life as you know. I am always trying to find those in-between moments to savour - sometimes they are hard to find - but it is the little moments that bring the greatest pleasure.

Being able to wake up without an alarm, drinking my morning tea out on the balcony and looking into the greenery, bringing flowers in, taking the country road instead of the motorway to get to places nearby so that I can look at the houses and gardens as I drive along, taking time to sit and stroke my pets or play with them, going out for a leisurely walk and a coffee at any time of day, especially on a weekday, watching the weather change as I go through my routines… and just getting absorbed in domestic tasks like ironing or pottering around rearranging things! So much scope :)

What a lovely list. We watch the weather a lot here - it can change every 10 minutes!

Actually, your blog is one of mine: every day at my desk in a central London office when I have my 4 o'clock tea break. I really look forward to it.

Spaces in between. Doors for wonder and joy to come in: sitting
on the threshold of my balcony, my slice of selfbaked bread each morning, reading my poem of the day, admiring my empty desk.
When I look at my day I have more spaces in between in the morning than in the afternoon and now wonder why that is.

I think you must be a poet too Cath - 'doors for wonder and joy to come in' - a lovely image. Thank you.

Walking the dog , taking moments to stop and stare , sharing special moments with family, friends and fellow bloggers. I could do with following your example and adding extra pauses in my day! Sarah x

I expect you know the Davies poem Sarah 'A poor life this if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare'..
